Communication Culture at Work

This has been the week when I have actually started to notice how our workplace communication culture shapes and molds our day-to-day interactions. Interestingly, the tone of e-mails or the vibe in meetings just creates an atmosphere in which people will be empowered to share their ideas or hesitant. I have noticed how, when leaders make open dialogue a priority, it empowers everyone to contribute by allowing for a sense of belonging. On the other hand, unclear or very formal communication suppresses creativity and creates misunderstandings.

I also appreciated those moments when people took the time personally to inquire about one's well-being before delving into work matters. It is these little things that amount to much when it comes to trusting and making friends with fellow colleagues. It brings into view the fact that it's not just about the words but much more about the connections one makes with other people. Going ahead, I would like to learn from this and improve my communication style with the goal of building that inclusive environment.

This week, I reflected on the interrelations between listening and writing in our communications. It really dawned on me how effective writing is sometimes all about active listening. When we listen properly, we understand more and appreciate the needs and viewpoints of our audience, thus providing a better written message.

I listened a little more intently during the team meetings, jotted down things that were said and emotions expressed. This practice informed my writing later and improved my comprehension.

That is why, upon taking the various 'aha' moments from these discussions and applying them to my emails or reports, the feedback is more positive and engaging. It only reiterates the fact that good writing is not just clarity but about resonance with others. Later, I will do more effort to listen more to improve my writing and to connect people around me better.

Verbal and non-verbal Communication

This week, I was digging into the dynamics of verbal and non-verbal communication in our interaction. How amazingly out of this world it has blown my mind how our body language and facial expressions, even our tone, strongly reflects from the messages we portray. When discussions are held, words will have mattered, but more often than not, non-verbal cues do most of the talking.

Examples are the fact that a colleague's nodding encouraged others to contribute ideas, while his crossed arms seemed to create barriers in conversations. It came to me as interesting how the subtlety of listening, such as keeping eye contact, could open a conversation more.

Knowing this interplay has instigated in me the desire to observe my non-verbal signals more. While doing so, that is, practicing consistency in verbal and non-verbal communications, I would like to make it easier for everyone to be more expressive.

This week, I explored interpersonal strategies and skills that help in improving work relationships. I realized that effective communication is much more about rapport and understanding beyond mere words. Accordingly, some of the major techniques that struck my attention were active listening and empathy.

When I actually listened to people and understood their feelings, I found our interaction changing for good. I try to ask open-ended questions that can lead to longer answers and possibly more substantive conversation.

I also realized the importance of providing constructive feedback positively towards growth, rather than discouragement. Indeed, these strategies promote a collaborative environment that enhances trust between its members. Later on, I will be continuing to work on all these skills so that I can contribute to a more connected and supportive team dynamic.

This week, I focused on interviewing-both as an interviewer and a candidate. I came to understand that preparation was key, formulating thoughtful questions could lead to a depth of insight. Then I engaged in active listening whereby candidates were allowed to express themselves without cuts and which really made for a less frenetic atmosphere.

On the other hand, I reflected on my interviewing skills-realizing that I have to be clear and confident talking about my experiences. I will now know that rapport is very important in creating a connection that will help dissolve some of those nerves. This week really nailed it into my head: interviewing is a two-way street-the more effective the interview, the more understanding and trust it builds.
