 I am very open about the fact that one of the most important character traits for me is admitting when you are wrong. Owning up to your mistakes is key. I think making it clear that you don't know everything and asking for help when needed also shows strong leadership ability. I believe people would rather follow a leader who is real and says “Opps, I goofed up, let's move on from here” than a leader who will die on a hill that they are right when clearly, they are not. 
 

2. In what ways do I acknowledge and learn from my mistakes to promote a growth mindset within the school community? 

As an art teacher mistakes are commonly something that students struggle with. I have posters and whole talks with them about what they can do with a mistake in art such as change it into something new, erase it, turn the paper over, cut it out. While obviously it is not necessarily as easy to remedy mistakes in a leadership setting, I think I can take some of my own advice. A mistake does not need to be the end of the world and sometimes something even better can come out of it. First accepting that a mistake happened, then thinking about why it happened and finally how it can be remedied. 

3. How do you ensure that your personal values align with the school’s mission and vision? 

At the beginning of each school year teachers and administrators are reminded of the mission and vision statement for both the district and the school. Sometimes this is the one and only time this is looked at throughout the year. I order to make sure not only my own but everyone's values align it is important for the vision and mission to become a part of the everyday running of the school.  One way that I have seen this done is through a collaborative theme for the school year. Everything revolves around this theme and the theme aligns with the mission and vision. One year the theme was Be....and we had t-shirts that listed characteristics such as responsible, trustworthy, caring, etc. 

4. What initiatives have I implemented to foster a culture of respect, empathy, and collaboration among students and staff? 

Last school year I formed the AMS Allyship club. My principal, a collegue and myself hand picked students to become part of the AMS Student Leadership Summit. These students learned about research, wrote and conducted a survey of the student body, analyzed the data and presented this data to the school climate and culture committee and well as the district as a whole. The whole premise of this activity was to engage the students in being a vital voice in their school. After presenting to the culture and climate committee some of their suggestions were taken on and implemented into this school year. I would like to see it taken further though and become a more regular occurrence. 

5. What strategies do I employ to provide constructive feedback that encourages professional development? 

Again pulling from my art background where critiques are vital to growth, I use a similar model with adults. I think you always need to start off the conversation and end the conversation positively. In between you sandwich constructive feedback. This cannot just be an “I don't like....”. There needs to be substance to what you are saying. Also, it should include actionable items to work on and a proposed reevaluation schedule.
