Playboi Carti, born Jordan Terrell Carter on September 13, 1996, in Atlanta, is 28 now and a big deal in rap. He grew up in Riverdale and is known for his experimental trap style, with hits like “Magnolia” and “wokeuplikethis*”. His first album, Die Lit, blew up, and then his second album, Whole Lotta Red, went number one on the Billboard charts, even though people didn’t know what to think of it at first. Carti’s style is super different, and he’s also into fashion, working with brands like Nike and designers like Raf Simons. He’s also in the headlines because of his relationship with Iggy Azalea, and they have a son named Onyx. Even though he doesn’t have a ton of awards, his influence on rap and underground music is crazy. I like his music because I’m really into underground sounds, and he’s like the GOAT of that style. Everyone tries to sound like him, but honestly, you have to really listen to his music a few times before it hits. Once you get it, though, no one else compares.

The song “Magnolia” is Playboi Carti’s most lyrically influential track because it captures the effortless, catchy energy that defined his style and helped push the sound of modern rap. One of the most iconic lines is “In New York I Milly Rock,” which became a viral phrase, tying into a popular dance and showcasing how Carti’s music can connect with culture. This line is influential because it’s simple yet effective, making a direct reference that people could instantly relate to. Another standout line, “Pockets swole like a sumo,” is a memorable way of talking about wealth that fans found relatable and fun. It’s influential in how it uses quick, vivid images that don’t need complex wordplay just something catchy and easy to repeat. Overall, “Magnolia” brought this kind of repetitive, hook based lyricism to the forefront, showing that sometimes less is more in making a song hit.

The lyrics of “Magnolia” are influential to me because they show how simple, catchy lines can become iconic and still have a huge impact. Carti doesn’t rely on advanced wordplay, but instead he creates phrases that are easy to repeat and resonate with listeners. For example, the line “In New York I Milly Rock” isn’t just about the words it’s about how it connects to the culture and the dance, which makes it memorable. Another line, “Pockets swole like a sumo,” makes a clear image that’s both fun and relatable. The influence comes from how Carti makes his lyrics feel more like a vibe than a story showing that sometimes being straight forward and catchy is what really makes a song stand out.

Carti’s music and image are deeply tied to the visual art that defines hip hop culture from graffiti to album covers and music videos. Graffiti which emerged in the 1970s alongside hip hop, served as a rebellious form of self expression using bold colors and unique styles to tell stories in public spaces. Similarly, Carti includes bold rebellious imagery into his work, such as the Whole Lotta Red album cover, which pays homage to punk zine culture with its black and white photo and striking red accents. His music videos also draw on experimental and gothic themes, using dark lighting, distorted visuals, and dramatic fashion to create a raw otherworldly vibe. By blending the rebellious spirit of graffiti with his avant garde aesthetic Carti continues hip hop’s tradition of using visual art as a powerful form of expression.
