State testing..

At the middle school we do three rounds of MAP testing breaking up a total of 12 school days plus OST which breaks up an additional 6 days. In an 180 school day year, that's 10% on JUST testing. Not to mention preparing for the tests.

Absences...

Since COVID, kids miss so much school. On average, it feels like I'll have 1-3 students absent a period. If they miss two three days in a row they miss a whole topic.

Lack of support...

If a student is on an IEP or 504, sometimes the SST is unavailable for support, or schools are ill prepared for students with disabilities.

Cell phones...

Kids are addicted to their cell phones and social media apps. While in school, teachers are constantly fighting against kids wanting to be on their phones/headphones.

Home lives...

Kids have parents that are working or don't have the resources for tutors, assistance, internet, etc.

Peer pressures...

Kids once they reach the age they get heavily influenced by their peers. Vulgar language, drugs, vapes, violence, vandalism, etc.

Motivations...

Many students now hate school and only attend because they have to. Some lack the proper motivations to learn.

Gaps in learning...

If they are chronically truant they they will naturally have gaps in their learning. Especially if miss key units/topics or struggle with a subject and fail.
