Sie können sowohl in den trockenen Regionen der arabischen Halbinsel überleben, als auch nördlich des Polarkreises. Ihr Hauptverbreitungsgebiet sind die Wälder und Kulturlandschaften der gemäßigten Breiten.

Je nach Lebensraum variiert ihre Körperfarbe und -größe. Mit einer Schulterhöhe von etwa 40 Zentimetern und einer Länge bis zu 1,20 Metern (mit Schwanz) werden sie nicht sehr groß. Ein stattlicher Kater kann in etwa dieselben Maße erreichen. 

Zudem sind Rotfüchse schlank und leicht. Das durchschnittliche Körpergewicht liegt zwischen 5,5 und 7,5 Kilogramm. Zum Vergleich: Ein Haushund von gleicher Größe wiegt etwa das Doppelte.

Je nördlicher die Tiere leben, desto kleiner sind ihre Ohren und desto dichter wird ihr rötliches Fell.
