Alyssa Richardson was put into the care of Dawn Marie Cooper. Alyssa wouldn't stop crying so Mary Cooper (Dawn Cooper's 9 year old daughter) gave the baby her pills that she believed would make Alyssa stop crying. Instead Alyssa started choking on the pills and Dawn then had to try and get the pills out of her throat. Dawn used a cross to try to get the pills out and failed to do so. Mary tried to take Alyssa out of Dawn's hands, but Alyssa got thrown by Mary while they were struggling to her from one another. Then Dawn closed the door and tried to bring Alyssa back, but she couldn't.The victim of the case was Alyssa Richardson who was killed. The suspects are Mary Cooper and Dawn Cooper.

Scene/Evidence

"Oh. Oh right, my cross. Well, yes, I used to. But... not that often. Not all the time...." "Do you still wear it?" "No. I lost it." "When?" "About a few years back." "Do you remember specifically when?" "No. Now what's this all about?" "There was a specific item we kept from the press... about something that was found in Alyssa's throat." "What's all this got to do with me?" "The jewel found in Alyssa's throat matches the description of a jewel on your cross. The one people said they saw you wear all the time."(Page 316)" Dawn knows she is cornered here because she knows the cross went missing around the same time that Alyssa died. If they somehow found the cross she would be incriminated with the murder even more than she already was.
"The cross you stuffed down Alyssa's throat trying to get the pills out. The one you tried to 'save' her with. I kept the cross, Momma. That's why they couldn't find it.... "And I never touched it.(Page 367)" This is very crucial evidence because it will show that Dawn really stuffed a cross down an infants throat to try and get some pills stuck out of her throat. It shows that she was in charge of Alyssa and she couldn't handle the responsibility correctly and ended up having to do that.
" All I remember is checking on her the same way I used to check on Junior, but she wouldn't keep quiet. So I gave her my pills. Ray used to say them pills were to shut me up so I figured they'd work on her. But she wouldn't stop...she wouldn't listen.... (Page 383)" Mary gave Alyssa her pills because she thought that would stop Alyssa's crying. Mary admits to killing Alyssa here. If she hadn't gave her the pills she wouldn't have died. Since she was abused so much she thought that the pills would truly make Alyssa stop crying. And since she was a very young girl and didn't know better she decided to give them to her. Mary then also admits to throwing Alyssa. If the pills hadn't killed her the throw definitely did. "Next thing I knew Momma was fighting me. She wouldn't let go of her.... she tripped over my pill bottle..... I wasn't holding on tight enough and Alyssa flew. I didn't mean to throw her!(Page 383)" In her final attempt at saving her she might've given Alyssa the final blow and killed her right then and there.

A lot of people had comments on Mary and what had happened in the case. Mary's neighbors claim that she was seen digging outside the night Alyssa was killed. She dug and dug forcing herself to dig because her momma had told her to do so. This made Mary look pretty suspicious. While she was locked up her fellow inmates said that she would be targeted by everyone else and the cos wouldn't do anything because of how smart she was. "She was once in the nurse's office for like a whole month with some broken ribs. So the COs just kept her in the hole.(Page 94)" She would be abused and would just take the blows. She wouldn't do anything. "She said during the summer she had some issues with her hitting and biting people...Said that Mary was silent the entire time, never said a word or colored a picture." Mary didn't do what normal kids her age did. She was very unique and different.

Interviews

There were a lot of interviews throughout the book. Mostly all were describing and talking about Mary. About how she was way too smart to be in her normal classes, but her mother wouldn't let her take placement tests, about how she was awkward and very quiet, about how she was seen digging the day Alyssa was murdered and many more. Mary's mother in one of the interviews claims Mary to be "The Devil's Child" and doesn't claim her as her daughter. From this we learn that she is not Mary's biological mother.

Conclusions

In conclusion given all this evidence and statements from different people, Mary Cooper killed Alyssa Richardson. If the pills had never been put into her mouth, Dawn would have never had to try and get them out. Dawn instructed Mary to take the pills herself because she was freaking out that Alyssa wouldn't stop crying. Dawn however did try to bring her back to life doing a ritual and by using the cross she wore to try to retrieve the pills and prevent Alyssa from dying. Mary caused all of this to happen. She even threw Alyssa while trying to take her away from Dawn. Dawn not really being afraid of having the case reopened shows that she knows she didn't play as much of a role as Mary. Alyssa was bruised after she tried getting the pills out of her throat.
