         <description><![CDATA[<ol><li><p>Discovery of Soviet missiles in Cuba:  On October 14, 1962, United States reconnaissance flights over Cuba captured photographic evidence of Soviet missiles being installed on the island.</p></li><li><p>Kennedy's response:  In a televised address to the nation on October 22, President Kennedy announced the discovery of the missiles and proclaimed that the United States would impose a naval blockade, termed a "quarantine," to prevent further Soviet shipments of military equipment to Cuba.</p></li><li><p>Soviet ships approach blockade line:  Tensions escalated as Soviet ships approached the U.S. naval blockade line around Cuba.</p></li><li><p>Negotiations and diplomacy:  Secret negotiations took place between representatives of the United States and the Soviet Union. One critical channel was established between Kennedy's brother, Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy, and Soviet Ambassador to the United States Anatoly Dobrynin. These negotiations played a crucial role in defusing the crisis.</p></li><li><p>Removal of missiles:  On October 28, 1962, Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev announced that the Soviet Union would dismantle and remove the missiles from Cuba in exchange for a public commitment by the United States not to invade Cuba and a private assurance that the United States would remove its Jupiter missiles from Turkey.
