The Goal was for British and Frech forces to combine to win a victory over Germany on the Western Front. However, the British ended up having to do it alone. Germany had laid out defenses for many months prior and the British were locked in battle. For 141 days, the British only moved 7 miles and both sides had a million men injured. The first day was marked as the bloodiest day in British history due to the 57,000 casualties, 19,240 of which were deaths. This taught British officers a lesson that would help the Allies secure a victory in 1918.
