Children have to come to age rapidly when their parents don't support them physically or emotionally.

This is an example of Coming to Age/identity because on page 9 it says "When I stood up and started stirring the hot dogs again, I felt a blaze of heat on my right side. Frozen with fear, I watched the yellow-white flames make a ragged brown line up the pink fabric of my skirt and climb my stomach. The flames leaped up, reaching my face." When Jeannette screamed for her mother who was in the other room painting Rose Mary "Threw a blanket around me to smother the flames. Mom grabbed me and my younger brother, Brian, and hurried over to the trailer next to ours. Mom, in an unnaturally calm voice, explained what had happened and asked if we could please have a ride to the hospital." Rose Mary was very inattentive to her children and spent her time painting in the other room instead of providing for her children. Her children had learned to be self-sufficient from a young age since they were basically alone and had no other choice except to provide for themselves. Jeannette was on fire and Rose Mary was not concerned or worried in the slightest. Rose Mary was very calm throughout the entire thing and actually wasn't happy that Jeannette was in the hospital at all.

Children feel disappointment when their parents let them down.

This is an example of Disappointment because on page 229 it says, "He started going on about how a man comes home from slaying dragons, trying to keep his family safe, and all he wants in return for his toil and sacrifice is a little love and respect, but it seemed these days that was just too damn much to ask for." "Why are you doing this to us, Dad?" I asked "Why?" "His face tightened with anger, then he staggered to the sofa bed and passed out." The children were all working and saving money to send Lori to New York so she can follow her dreams and continue with her art. They had been saving for about a year to earn enough money so Lori could live there. Their dad was famous for taking money from the family to feed his addictions. Rex is a narcissist who has no problem stealing from his family and lying about it to their face but when he questioned about it, he enjoys playing victim and making it about himself and how everyone should feel bad for him and tries to manipulate them into thinking that he deserves it because of "everything he does for them."

Despite terrible circumstances children will still accept their parents for who they are in order to maintain that parental figure in their life.

This is an example of Acceptance because on page 116 it says, "Do you think you could maybe stop drinking?" to which Rex replied "You must be awfully ashamed of your old man" he worked hard to keep himself sober and even chained himself up. He cried and moaned from the stages of withdrawal, but it didn't last very long for him. "I couldn't believe Dad had gone back to the booze. With Dad drinking again, and no money coming in." With the extra money from him not drinking they could spend it on food but since he went back to drinking food was no longer an option since the money was gone within an instant of getting it. Even when Rose Mary got a job as a teacher and was making money Rex went with her to the bank, so he was ensured to get the money. As Jeannette got older, she came to accept the fact that it's just who Rex was, and he wasn't ever going to change. He had been an alcoholic since he was about 13 and had although he tried to become clean, she knew he'd never actually become sober.

As children grow into adults, they learn how to forgive those who have hurt them over the years especially family.

This is an example of Forgiveness because on page 288 it says, "We should drink to toast to Rex" John said. Mom held up her glass and said, "Life with your father was never boring." Even after all the horrible things Rex put them through, they were all able to put it behind them and instead chose to see only the positive.

Most children learn Self-Sufficiency by the age of 18 when they are a legal adult and have a job while also looking for housing and learning to no longer rely on financial support from their parents.

This an example of Self-Sufficiency because on page 214 it says "We were about to run out of grocery money. It was my first real job. Babysitting and tutoring and doing other kids' homework and mowing lawns and redeeming bottles and selling scrap metal didn't count. Forty dollars a week was serious money." Jeannette was 13 years old at the time she got hired but lied about her age saying she was 17 which got her the job right there on the spot. By the age of 13 Jeannette had a good paying job for her small town and her age. She was taking care of grocery shopping, a job, and taking care of the family while her father was absent in this time always gone and only coming back to ask for money for his alcohol addiction. She learned how to be independent and not have to rely on any aid and only rely on herself.

Children who grew up in chaos often grow up to crave the order they never had growing up.

This is an example of Chaos and Order because on page 252 it says "A van had broken down, spilling clothes and furniture all over the road and creating a big backup. The police were trying to clear the highway, but a dog had jumped out of the van and was running up and down the turnpike as a couple of officers chased after him." This is just one example of how chaotic Rose Mary and Rex are and what Jeannette had to deal with growing up. Luckily by then she was already an adult and making something of herself. As she grew up and moved away from her parents, she craved the order and control she never had. She grew up with a mother who hoarded everything and anything really but especially her paintings she did. When Jeannette bought her house, she wanted order and control over it and hated hoarding or any messes, she invited her mother Rose Mary to live her where she has her own space and Jeannette accepts her mother will always hoard but as for her house, she likes to keep it clean and organized.
