Professional Perspective
This presentation is for individuals who work in higher education and with student organizations. In an effort to be inclusive and non- discriminatory, schools sometimes violate expression association which is tied to the First Amendment. Additionally, there is a growing intolerance of Christian, conservative values on school campuses and, as a professional within the student affairs realm at a graduate school, it is important to understand current issues and laws to provide students guidance and/or to be an advocate for students. This topic was chosen for its relevance in today's society.

Interview
Dr. Moore believes freedom of speech is pertinent because this is a reoccurring theme that is resurfacing. She believes the UNT Health Science Center has not had any issues of this kind because student groups and advisers are educated on school policies and laws. Additionally, they receive training yearly to keep them informed should changes arise.
Best Practices
*training of students on student organizations and laws pertaining to freedom of speech
*a yearly review of student organization's bylaws ensuring student organization's bylaws have no discriminating language
*keep abreast of legislative changes and make necessary changes to school policies
Rising Issue
The issue of freedom of speech is a recurring theme and is a topic that is finding its way into higher education more frequently. In September, the Texas legislature in Senate Bill 18 reaffirmed the freedom of expression within college circles. It suggested schools allow for robust and uninhibited debate on and off campus. This is of utmost importance because this is foundational to education.
(L.

Current News Articles
In March of 2019, President Trump issued an executive order that calls for colleges and universities to allow for freedom of speech on their campus or risk losing federal funding. Many of his supporters applaud his actions because they argue higher education institutions have drowned out conservative voices to the more liberal perspectives. David Harris, president of Union College, makes the bold statement he disagrees with this decision, but makes the important point that the benefit from freedom of speech comes from dialogue and not from merely making a statement of one's beliefs and walking away. He goes on to say that through constructive engagement, freedom of speech is enhanced.
*freedom of speech is at the forefront including in legislative circles
*colleges and universities are discussing this topic on their campuses
Harris, D.
