Students, please note: some procedures differ slightly due to varying library policies, however this video will give you a basic overview of the process

• Books by authors from a certain country

• Books taking place in a certain country

  (Choose unusual countries like Norway, Iceland or Madasgar get really specific like nordic books about crime)

• Books that have a cover in unusual colors like green or purple, etc.

• Books with bikes/cats/coffee cups on cover

• Books published in 1955, or any other year (maybe the year library was founded or some other locally significant event)

• Books by authors who all have the same first name (Maybe unusual or other non-western name)

• Books with titles that include numbers

• Books with the longest titles in our collection

• Top 10, 15, 25 most checked out titles from a specific or niche genre

• A “Be the first” display showing books that have never been checked out, despite being available for some time.

• 24 books so short you can finish them in one day, advent calendar style.

• Books that include characters with the same first name.

• The oldest cooking books available

• Short works by big authors

• Famous authors’ first books, maybe bundled with their last book

• A “Don’t make displays when you’re hungry” books with food

• Run a list of books that haven’t been checked out in the last year but are 3 years old

• Recently returned books

• Overstocked shelves - books from shelves that are too full

• Books on random and unusual holidays

• BookTok Favorites

• Books that have been made into movies

Notice the best practices where:

• patron is greeted upon arrival

• desk attendant stands up to greet the patron

• attendant asks if there is anything else she can help with

• attendant offers to help patron order the book from ILL

• attendant explains the location of the book

• attendant is friendly and smiles, making the patron feel welcome

  
  

Shelf Reading is throwing us some curve balls. Please keep sharing your experiences so we can build a smooth system for this new process.

I will be posting updates to shelf reading in this spot, so check here often.

NOTE: iPads are currently NOT sending emails. If you shelf read using an iPad, please choose to save your session in Files.

Before Use:

1. You must watch the two button-making tutorials above, two times each.

2. Confirm you have watched them by typing your first name in the “comments” section of each video tutorial.

During Use:

1. Don’t force the handle of the machine past its point of compression.

2. Don’t force the various size templates past the guide piece that stops it in the right position. You need to watch the video to understand how to lift the top portion and CAREFULLY slide the bottom piece out.

3. Make sure you are using the metal pegs, and please don’t lose them.

4. Slide the thin plastic sheets between your thumbs to make sure you only have one. They are VERY thin.

1. All images must be PG-rated or lower – no images containing horror, gore, nudity, or potentially offensive language may be used.

2. All images must be quality, high-resolution images. Don’t use grainy, heavy pixel, low brightness, or otherwise hard to see images.

3. Go for QUALITY over QUANTITY. (The buttons are a limited resource at this time, so be selective with images you choose.)

Selecting Quality Images & Large-Size Images:

1. After performing an image search in Google, click “Tools” along the top row, to the right of “Images.”

2. Click the pulldown arrow and select “Large” to show only images that are at the minimum size for printing.

3. Another good place to find free license images is Vecteezy. Search your image and select “free license” from the sidebar.

We are noticing more shelving mistakes lately. Please continue to be diligent and attentive when shelving every item. It really matters!

● Books with yellow NEW stickers go on the New Arrivals shelf in front of the desk. These books MUST BE PUT IN CALL NUMBER ORDER! Your flag needs to be in the book you reshelve.

●Books with Pink/Red NEW stickers will be replacing the B&T red sticker books. These books do not need to be reshelved in call number order. No flag is needed.

●A General Collection book was reshelved on the NEW Arrivals shelf with no flag. Always check the computer screen to verify the collection in which an item belongs. WMS will alert you upon checking in an item. 👀

• Use the number on the BACK of the card to register it on the mobile site.

We had three patrons come in today whose reservations were not recorded, so we didn't have an empty room for them. I tracked down their reservations in the folder on the desk which meant they were never entered. Please don't stress about this. It totally happens when we get busy. Just help each other remember to use the tray for any reservations.

Also - Patrons ALWAYS receive a confirmation email when they make a reservation. If a patron says they have a reservation, please ask to confirm the reservation on their email: "Did you receive an email confirmation? Would it be ok if I check that real quick?"

Check the date and room assignment. This is normally where the confusion takes place.

It is NOT possible that the print out schedule at the desk is wrong. It only prints what has been entered in the system. For example, a patron will be mistaken if they say they received an email for "room 303" but the sheet states they are booked for "room 305." The sheet is correct and their email will confirm what the sheet states. Any questions, please ask.

Current cards must be laminated on the 5MIL setting, not 3mil. This impacts the heat setting and ensures the 5mil plastic is fully melted and sealed.

Select this setting on the front of the laminating machine.

(Our 8.5x11 lamination pages are still 3mil.)

To that end, if you encounter any question that you think we might not be able to help with, PLEASE share it with us immediately. We will always try to find a way to support a visitor's need, so check with us before saying "no." And keep recording those questions in Gimlet. It's hugely helpful and important!
