I have long said that if I can make a difference in the life of one person, I have been a success. Hearing that because of me and/or my actions, etc. someone is better off, successful, has accomplished a goal, or simply feels better about who they are I have been effective. This is the most rewarding and most important element of my role. We are always going to have our plates full and attempt to efficiently approach our role and responsibilities, but the reality is our counselor to student ratios are so high that it is not always possible to accomplish everything every day. That is what I strive for daily. High caseloads pose a challenge. When appropriate, groups are helpful in reaching bigger numbers with similar issues. Grief/loss is a very specific issue that most students enjoy addressing as a group. I’m never satisfied with my work but I try my best every day.
