Japan is an island nation right off the coast of east Asia. It is made up of about 4 large islands and approximately 3,900 smaller ones. Japan has a moderate climate. The summers are warm while their winters are relatively mild, they have heavy snowfall limited to the northern islands. In the summer they have a lot of rain which that's what makes japan an ideal place for growing rice and other crops.

Crowding in Japan has big effect on transportation. The average commute time in Tokyo is a hour and a half each day. That adds up to about 400 hours every.

Public Transportation:
In the subways they have pushers that wear white gloves to push as many people as possible into a train. The Japanese have developed some of the fastest trains in the world. They are called bullet trains because of the shape and speed. They can travel at the speed of 180 mph.

Private Cars and Parking Problems: Besides japans perfect transportation. Japanese have their own cars and love to drive them. Since car ownership increased , so has the traffic jams and parking problems. Parking in Japan is a big problem in Tokyo. In tokyo you cant own a car unless you can prove you have a place of the streets to park it. Tokyo has also built a high raise garage. You put your car in the cabinet and raises your car.

Houses in japan are smaller than American homes. Many of the Japanese families live in apartments that are the size of a family room in a American house.

From the country to the city:
About fifty years ago the Japaneses lived in a one story homes on the farms. They lived in extended families. The pattern started to change in 1950, many of the people moved to the city to go to school and work.

Making the most of limited space:
The japanese made clever ways to make the most of their space. They have used their rooms for more than just one purpose. A Lot of the homes don't have separate bedrooms. They put futons in their closets and when it came to sleep they took it out and laid it on the floor to sleep.

Conflicts over land use in japan are common. The government have offered them to move the home owners to another area, but the people resisted the plan. The neighbors threatened to burn down the house of the people who agreed to the offer.

Building up and down :
One of the ways they have came up with the make their land use better is to make the buildings taller. But they have a limited height for buildings safety reasons. Another way they made their use better is by making things underground such as shopping centers, parks and even a zoo.

Creating New land: They were able to create new land by putting dirt and rubble into shallow wetlands.

Pollution Problems:
Garbage is one of the health problems that can start to build up as the population density increases. Whenever people move into the cities the pollution problem follows. smoke from the factories, and the exhaust from the cars cause breathing problems. Even tho the streets get swept everyday the rain contains acid there and the rainfall containing acid pollutes the water and soil. Also water pollution from factories and farms was a big problem. In the past they had toxic chemicals that were being pumped into the oceans and streams. The chemicals started to poison the fish and anyone who ate the fish got poisoned too.

Long Lives:
There are more car accidents that happen on the city streets of japan than the country roads. Also the spread of disease happen faster in the city than small towns. They have passed strict laws to clean up the air and water, so in that case it is safer to breath, also people wont be poisoned from the fish.

The japanese have found various ways to deal with the crowding situation. Japan is a very wealthy country, they are able to afford high rise buildings, apartments, houses and a good public transportation. They can also afford to clean up the polluted air and waters. Even tho japan is over crowded they still enjoy their long lives.
