         <description><![CDATA[<div>- March 11th 2011, Japan.<br>- Largest recorded earthquake in Japan which hit 9.1 on the magnitude scale (Live Science, 2016).<br>- Earthquakes and tsunamis regularly happen.<br>- 'The Pacific Ring of Fire' was the cause of this .<br>- To prepare themselves, the following steps have been put into place,<br>Resistant Houses;<br>Earthquake Alert System;<br>Disaster Prevention System (Japan Info, 2016).<br><br>Due to these strategies, the number of deaths and injuries from earthquakes have decreased (Japan Info, 2016).<br><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>- April 16th 2007, Virginia Tech Shooting. <br>- 32 deaths. 17 injured.<br>- 23-year-old Student was assisted in finding counselling for mental health, and professionals assessed him and concluded no further action was to be taken. Said student then carried out a double homicide within the on-campus accommodation, at 9:00am (NY Times, 2008)<br>- The university did not alert faculty or students about the situation, as they didn't want to alarm anyone and tried to tackle the situation unnoticed. He then conducted the mass shootings at 11:00am (NY Times, 2008)<br>- As in 2007, active shooting was not as common as it is now; the university did not have a crisis management plan in place for this scenario, (NY Times, 2008)<br>- The University was criticized by local authorities for not handling the situation better - both the shooting and the mental health of the 23-year-old student, (NY Times, 2008)<br>- A crisis management scheme was put in place after this event, but it was only in 2014 that the crisis management plan for this scenario was made public, as it wasn't until then that the situation was classed as "common" - following the Sandy Hook and Aurora shootings in 2012, (Virginia Tech, 2017)<br>- The crisis management consists of three steps <strong>'Run Hide Fight</strong>', which is lectured every year to students.          <description><![CDATA[<div>Root cause: Natural climate and climate change is increasing the severity of hurricanes.&nbsp;<br>Hurricane Irma<br>Locals were warned in "good time" and were advised to travel North out of the direction of the hurricane. Emergency officials helped with this. This is a form of Crisis Communication. Due to its vulnerability after the crisis, a Disaster Emergency Fund (DREF).<br><br>Vulnerability<br>- Georgraphical location&nbsp; of Florida (Humid-Subtropical/Tropical climate) makes the risk of hurricanes more likely (Media, 2017).&nbsp;<br>- Short-term planning decisions by real-estate developers and home-buyers continue to build in floodplains which is fueling the crisis (Leber, 2017).&nbsp;<br>- Donald Trump's recent executive order reversing Barack Obama's Elevated Flood Standards will only make crisis planning worse (Leber, 2017).&nbsp;<br>- Climate change and the overwhelming "deniers" do not prepare for a crisis (Leber, 2017).<br>- A lot more valuable property is in harms way - $80 - $100 billion cost in physical damage in Miami (Leber, 2017).<br><br>National Hurricane Center state there are two factors contributing to weather safety;<br>- Prepare in advance<br>- Act on preparations when alerted by emergency officials<br><br>Framework (National Insurance Center, 2018):<br>1. Prepare in Advance<br>2. Enact your plan<br>3. Identify your spokesperson<br>4. Monitor the situation and conversations<br>5. Lessons learned</div>]]></description>
