Good point was made about the # of students teachers of the arts serve 20-100 and that it would take 3-4 core teachers to make-up the loss of one teacher of the arts.

Art programs provide advocacy for the whole child. It was interesting that he mentioned the idea of our arts teachers serving larger groups of students as opposed to the core teachers. Another interesting point made was the idea of engagement and how students are highly engaged while in music class. Learning movement skills enhances all parts of learning and this is essentially what our arts programs are providing to our students. Finally, it was interesting that certain arts programs can help students develop their sense of empathy and ability to listen to others and pay attention to their actions and words better.

The case that is made in support of the arts is substantive. How can the argument be supported in any fashion discrediting the value of the arts, especially when you look at the data that shows the correlation of what is learned to testing proficiency and social/emotional development.

I love the metaphor used illustrating how arts teaches life skills. The music/dance teacher talked about how if one person is struggling with the movements the whole team is struggling...what an amazing way to teach about life to young children.
The point about equitable access was very poignant. In many of our rural schools the only arts classes offered are music and visual arts. Those classes are always threatened in being cut due to budgets. In some schools, students do not even get access to those classes on a consistent basis due to teachers being split between multiple schools.

Arts are so important! "You don't have to be a professional musician to have music in your life." I really liked this quote. Arts are all around us everyday and what is so wonderful about arts is that you can be yourself and you are not wrong.
Every child should have access to a quality arts education.
The impact the arts has on a child's development is amazing and it teaches skills that students do not learn in regular classes. The skills they learn in arts can help them in their regular classes.
The arts teaches students that everyone has to work together to dance, sing, etc... if there is an issue or problem it has to be worked out to move forward.
Arts are fundamentally and as basic to education as reading and math.
The visual arts helps students to learn how to see better and how to generate mental images and manipulate them.

If we are truly going to take a holistic approach to educating young people, we must include, if not highlight the arts. In addition, in order to meet the needs of all children, we must individualize students' educations. Many students will have careers in the arts, if we are to prepare them for this, we have to put a high value on our all our art programs.

I liked that the video highlighted the importance of the arts in hooking and connecting students to the school community. This concept of educating the "whole child" was powerful; not every child will connect with the words in a book, but some will connect to the lyrics in a song.
