When I think of "The Power of a Single Story," I think about how one person's experience can have an effect on many people. One person's life experience can be relatable to many people regardless of their lifestyles or their backgrounds. A single story can be from someone's childhood, or from their adult life. To me, that story somehow changes that person for better or worse, and effects the people who hear that story.

When I hear the phrase "single story", I interpret it in two ways. The first is reflected in Corinne Nelson's response. It is the belief that a single story or text can resonate with, change, and positively effect many readers. Conversely, I hear "single story" and think of the idea that diverse readers may be negatively impacted if they are only being exposed to one "story" that does not reflect their own experiences. When only one story is told, and it does not reflect the "story" of the reader, the reader may begin to feel that their own experiences are less valid or significant.

The power of a single story allows children to relate to any story in an inspiring manner. Most students who read something, feel a strong connection or power that allows them to have a strong affect on their ideas, minds, imagination or emotions. I know many adults and children also feel this when they read a powerful story that reminds of them of themselves, makes them feel good or even reflect on aspects of their lives.

When I read "the power of a single story," the first thing that popped in my head was the book Long Walk to Freedom by Nelson Mandela. I recently finished his autobiography and despite the fact that my life has absolutely little to nothing in common with Mandela's life, the book still made a profound impression on me. I believe the "power of a single story" relates to the idea of a strong narratives that have the ability to make deep and meaningful impressions on their readers.

When I think of "the power of a single story," I think of W.H. Auden. I think of a line from one my favorite poems by him that reads "In the prison of his days, teach the free man how to praise." This line has always meant so much to me because it represents the power of writing, reading, and "story" all wrapped up in one. For me, these things are everything. The stories we write and read help us connect as humans. They make the human experience a shared one, no matter how similar or different it may be from day to day.

When I think of the power of a single story, I think about how much it changes the ideals and values that I grew up with; how, in an instant, everything that you believed about a certain topic, situation, or circumstances can change because new information has been added. It not only changes your thinking, but it also helps you to make new decisions in our lives and in our experiences with others or that affect others. It can either be for the positive or the negative.

It reminds me of my childhood and how I longed for stories and characters who looked like me.

The power of a single story reminds me of stories from my own childhood that have shaped my life. The image in my mind of Sara Crewe giving bun after bun to a starving child, despite her own fierce hunger, is one I've held onto since I was 10 and first read A Little Princess by Frances Hodgson Burnett. Corrie Ten Boom's courage in Nazi-occupied Holland, working with the Dutch Resistance, had me thinking whether I could be that strong. I'd like to think that I've become a better person by being exposed to selfless, noble characters, in both fiction and non-fiction.
