Book Award: Schneider Family Book Award
Book Title: Just Ask! Be Different, Be Brave, Be You
Author: Sonia Sotomayor
Illustrator: Rafael López
Publication Date: 09/03/2019
Publisher: Penguin Young Readers Group
Grade Level: Pk-2, Ages 4-8
Genre: Nonfiction, Picture Book, Disability
Themes: Empathy
Artistic Media: Pencil, Watercolor, Acrylic
Pages: 32
Curricular Connections: Disabilities & Exceptionalities

Summary: The book talks about the kids planting a garden with a variety of different plants and relates it to us, we are all different than one another and that's what makes us unique and special, some examples of this from the book is being blind, autistic, having a stutter, tourettes, and so many different qualities that make each person their own. She gives us her own story about how when she was a child she had to give herself insulin injections and would notice others around her were curious. The author encourages children to ask if they have questions or don't understand.

Personal Response: I really enjoyed reading this story and I think the message shown throughout is so important and is something that should be discussed more, especially with younger students. I feel that this book does a wonderful job introducing children to different things that people deal with in their everyday lives. It gives students a small description of what that person is dealing with and an inside of what their lives look like.

Book Title: The One and Only Ivan

Author: Katherine Applegate

Illustrator: Patricia Castelao

Publication Date: 01/17/2012

Publisher: HarperCollins

Grade Level: 3-7

Genre: Children's Literature, Animal Fiction

Themes: Friendship, Art, Hope, Freedom/Captivity, Animal Rights

Artistic Media: This book is in black and white to portray the emotions felt by the different characters

Pages: 336

Personal Response: I really enjoyed reading this story and found it interesting knowing that it was inspired by a real gorilla, but it is fictional book. The powerful messages that it presents to readers, like friendship, hope, advocacy, resilience, and compassion make the story engaging and emotional to read and I think thats why I found the book so compelling.

Journey Map: This map shows the journey of Ivan and his life story. It starts with Ivan in his cage inside the Big Top Mall and Video Arcade, with his famous sign "Home of the One and Only Ivan, Mighty Silverback" on display. In the cage next to him is his elephant friend Stella who passes away from illness. This leads to the arrival of Ruby, a baby elephant who Ivan feels protective over. Ivan promises Stella a better life and plans for liberation by writing a letter with the help of Julia, his custodian friend. The letter gains the publics attention which leads to relocation for Ivan and Ruby. They are placed in a zoo with new and improved sanctuary where they both get to live out their lives free from captivity. Ivan continues creating art and enjoys the presence of Ruby and the other silverback gorillas while he lives out his life.

I think that this book is a great way to teach students the importance of advocacy and activism when they see something that isn't right. I think that the journey maps help students to creatively express the different plot and main events that take place, and help them gain a better understanding of the entire story.

Title: The Breadwinner

Author: Deborah Ellis

Illustrator: Cartoon Saloon

Publication Date: 2001

Publisher: Groundwood Books

Grade Level: Ages 10-14

Genre: Historical Fiction

Themes: War, Gender, Equality, Family,

Artistic Media: Graphic Novel

Pages: 77

Personal Response: I found this book to be really engaging and insightful about what it was like to be living through the war. The author uses real scenarios and stories to give the readers the harsh reality of living through destruction and what it would be like to live there. I also think that the illustrations used in the graphic novel did an excellent job of providing details to help tell the story and give the readers an insight into the emotions and experiences that these people went through (the emotion shown on their faces on each page is extremely detailed).

Heart Map: I divided my heart map into a few things; feelings and emotions experienced, society and war, and Parvana's actions during this time of hardship. Some different emotions Parvana experienced were anxiety, hope, courage, fear, and worry. The environment that this book takes place in is an oppressive society that is full of war and destruction under the rule of the Taliban. Parvana takes action to help her family survive and disguises herself as a boy to go work. The heart map activity allows students to be creative in their own ways and shows us what it was like to be living the life of Parvana and the different hardships that she and her family experience in this book. It also allows students to really navigate the main ideas and key parts to this book in a way that makes sense to them.

Discussion Questions:

1) Have you ever experienced something that made you scared or worried?

2) Why do you think Family is such a major theme in this book?

3) Do you think Parvana showed courage and resilience? In what ways?
