The Danger of a Single Story

-Power affects a story by the way it's told. The quote "history is written by the winners," backs up my claim. People like Alexander Hamilton and Abraham Lincoln are all "winners" in history. There power among society aloud them to change the way they were "written" about. Although they did do many great things for society, they weren't perfect. For example, many people know Alexander Hamilton for his wins that he brought for America, but not many know that he cheated on his wife. The "power" one has to change the way a story is told.

- Stories are important because that's how we as a society move forward. Stories shape peoples way of thinking and inspire them to do many great things. Stories can open up creativity. It's very important to reject the idea of a "single story" because often times you don't get the full picture. I really liked the fact she pointed out about the way American media treats immigrants and Mexicans. Her, being someone who struggled with the way American media persuade peoples opinion on Nigerians, was shocked about the fact how being in America had subconcossly changed the way she veiwed Mexicans. Even though there might be many sources it is still only one "story" or opinion. The American mindset people have on immigrants as a whole is tragic. The American Media protray mexicans and nigerians as poor and with low education. They look down on immigrants as a whole. It is only one story or opinion about them but yet Americans are following and having there own opinions with this one story.

My Spring Break

During my spring break this year I mainly spent it in Inglewood. Since I wasn't doing anything here in palmdale Monday and Tuesday, my parents gave me permission to spend a couple nights with my aunt, grandma, and little cousin. I really liked being at my aunt's house because I felt like I had more freedom. First night I spent there we went to get food from a food truck called "El Grito". I don't have a lot of experience with food trucks since my dad rarely likes eating out. But that food had to be one of the best meals I had. The food was filled with so much flavor and was given in a big portion. There guac sauce is delicious. Another thing I did while at Inglewood was going dress shopping in LA. The military ball is coming up and the theme was "Hollywood". My grandma, her friend, and I headed out to LA in the morning after dropping off my little cousin to school. I knew the dresses were going to be really expensive and over my budget especially since its prom season. We ended up walking around a lot going to different stores trying out dresses. There wasn't any dresses I really loved except one. It was beautiful but was, one, 150 dollars over my budget, and two, was more of a quince dress than a military ball dress. I will forever love that dress though, it even had pockets! Overall my spring break was pretty fun, I'm glad I spent it with my family.

[I carry your heart with me (I carry it in)] has got to be one of my all time favorite poems. Published in 1952 by Edward Estlin Cummings (e. e. Cummings) this love poem describes what is shown in the movies. E. E. Cummings does an extraordinary job at describing what true love is. He goes on explaining how no matter where he is, her love is always with him. "I carry my your heart with me (i carry it in my heart)". This is my favorite poem because I too want to carry someone's heart in my heart.

The main reason I like the poem "I carry your heart with me" is because it describes the power of true love. Many people fall out of love and don't see their partner with this much love. The quote, "I am never without it (anywhere I go you go , my dear; and whatever is done by only me is your doing, my darling)", is a perfect example of the big meaning of the poem. This poem could be taken in and adjusted to almost anyone's love life. But personally I think it fits best with a long distance relationship. Because the poet expresses how beautiful and perfect his partner is and how no matter where he is he still loves her the same. "I carry your heart (I carry it in my heart)

Sonnet 4 in modern English/ My Take

Wasteful youth, why do you squander on yourself the riches that you should leave to the world? Nature gives nothing but only makes a loan and, being generous, she lends only to those who are open-hearted. Then, beautiful miser, why do you abuse the generous inheritance given to you to leave to someone else? Unsuccessful money-lender, why do you spend such great sums when you can’t live forever, by thinking of yourself only? You are only cheating yourself, so, when nature calls you away what reasonable account will you be able to give of yourself? Your unused seed will have to be buried with you, which, if used, would live as the administrator of your beauty.

My Take:

I believe this sonnet is about the stress of the human mindset. People are always so focused on their riches and economic situation rather than about the well being of the future generation. This sonnet stresses the issue that we as a society have worried more about financial advances than about the way we take care of earth. Instead we should be worrying less about the way we look to each other financially and start looking into using our money for good. To be honest we don't really need to use money to become better people and taking care of the earth. Park clean ups, planting trees, recycling, these are easy ways to better the earth for the next generations to come.
