Parents are not considered as visitors. You are an integral part of your baby's care and welcome on the unit when ever you want, day or night. Very occasionally surgery will take place in an intensive care nursery, meaning that nursery will be closed usually for a couple of hours and we will inform you prior to this happening.

There are restrictions for family and friends who may visit between 2:00pm to 7:30pm. We ask for a maximum of 2 at a cot space of which one should be a parent. No children under the age of 16 unless they are the sibling of the baby can visit.

Anyone who is feeling unwell must not visit. We ask for outside clothes to be taken off before entering the nursery and hung up on the hooks provided.

Whilst you will be supported to express milk as soon as possible after delivery it can take a while for your milk supply to be established. If this is the case we may talk to you about donor breastmilk.

Donor milk is human breastmilk that has been voluntarily given by screened, healthy lactating people. The milk is collected, pasteurised, tested for safety, and then provided to babies who need it. Because it is real human milk, donor milk offers many of the protective and developmental benefits of breastmilk.

Research has shown that supplementation of donor breast milk alongside lactation support can increase breastfeeding rates upon discharge.

You will need to give your consent before your baby can receive donor breastmilk.

The study is comparing two ways of caring for babies having tube feeds, both ways are part of routine care, and both are commonly used in neonatal units across the UK.

The WHEAT International trial will compare two different approaches, feeding babies or not feeding babies during blood transfusions, to work out which one is better. Both approaches are standard practice in the UK, but we don’t know how best to feed babies during blood transfusions. Some hospitals and doctors stop feeds while others don’t. This is important because babies that are born early often need blood transfusions because they become anaemic (they do not have enough red blood cells, which can cause weakness or breathlessness). We know babies need blood transfusions, but we do not know how best to look after them during the transfusion. To find out more about the study please speak to your bedside nurse or a member of the research team.

The Gap study is keen to understand more about growth, metabolism and how best to feed babies born very prematurely at less than 32 weeks. This study measures babies’ arms and legs once a week, takes a urine sample once a week to look at how premature babies metabolise nutrition for growth and asks for a one-off blood sample (this can be optional) to look at how genetics/environment and exposure can influence metabolism of nutrition. For babies born at less than 28 weeks the study asks if parents would consent to an MRI which will be arrange for around the month of baby’s due date. For more information on this study please speak to your bedside nurse or ask for one of the research team.

Southampton milk bank is based in the Princess Anne hospital and run by staff from the neonatal unit. We run a service which collects breast milk donated by screened lactating parents (donors).

The Southampton milk bank supplies donor breastmilk not only to University Hospital Southampton (UHS), but to multiple hospitals and trusts in the south of England. Donor breastmilk is used as an alternative to formula milk when parents are unable to produce enough milk immediately, including preterm babies or when a birthing person has a medical issue that limits feeding. The milk bank pasteurises the donated milk (to ensure safety), stores it, and delivers it to neonatal units. The delivery and collection of milk is supported by the charity SERV.

If you would like more information on donating your milk please contact us on: 07795506279.

If we don't answer, please leave a message and we will get back to you.
