Few classes were observed using extensive text in the lesson. While most classes incorporated text in some fashion, students need more opportunities to dig into difficult text. Teachers should be careful not to continuously digest the text for students, they should instead provide key points while providing opportunities for students to dig deeper and analyze text. Students need to interact with difficult texts multiple times. Students should be provided with the opportunity to monitor their progress using academic vocabulary. Superficial use of text is not going to help our students succeed.

The majority of our class observations had little to no 1A text based engagement. The band class was the best example. Reading sheet music and harmonizing as a group was the strongest example we saw of this core action. The creative courses all had a hands on approach to the instruction.
