Another example it states "My mother used to call me her poloma her dove." this second quote describes that her mother used a metaphor to describe Maria Triste. This is a simile because it used like and its comparing to a bird when its soaring high.  The other simile is where it states " I am like an underground creature." This is also a simile because it uses like and is comparing to a creature. It is used to compare themselves and a small useless creature.  One metaphor is "   My mother used to call me her paloma, her dove." This is a metaphor because its comparing maria to a dove without using like or as.  This helps the reader because doves soar above others and fly high.  The other metaphor is when it says "and her ratoncita ,her little mouse" This is her mother comparing her to a mouse because she had a lot of energy.
