This is my 5th year to participate in #cyberpd. I teach First Nations students and the focus of the work is helping students find their voices, so that they  can stand up to the effects of colonialism that they encounter in their lives. It's not easy work. Sometimes the message is perceived negatively. Sometimes the students are indifferent. But sometimes students connect deeply with the ideas and weave them into their lives. I am always on the lookout for new approaches to support the tough conversations that oppression, reconciliation, and self-actualization generate. I've been a classroom teacher for 10 years, and this is my third time doing #cyberPD in the five years I’ve had my blog. I taught 3rd grade for 8 years, 4th grade for 4 years (concurrently with 3rd grade), 7th grade for 2 years, and this fall I will be teaching 5th grade, all at the same K-8 school in Wisconsin. Pfew! I am so excited about the potential for this book as I am working to construct and refine what fifth grade curriculum looks like at my school. (Because I teach accelerated students, I’m also sharing here on the middle school board.)

Finally, I am also a new mom (!) working to sneak moments of professional development (and meals) in between an only-ever 35-minute-long nap schedule. Yikes.

It usually depends if the book is in my to be read stack and this year it wasn't. I had a gift card and thought about another cooking book or stretching my thinking with other educators about a bigger picture in education. I am new to #cyberPD this year. I am a K-12 Supervisor for Curriculum and Instruction in West Windsor and Plainsboro New Jersey, #WWPRSD. My primary responsibility is to supervise novice teachers as they go through our four year induction process. I also plan and facilitate PD across the district. I was a classroom teacher for twenty some years and then a support teacher for mathematics before tackling this role in 2013. Our district Strategic Goals focus on student-centered learning, global competency, and the Whole Child. Each requires we teach empathy as well as perspective taking, and that we know our students and recognize our own implicit biases.
