Findings: This case reveals that there is severe mistreatment in the CJS. This is seen due to her lack of care such as spending extended amounts of time in confinement, was not given stuff to meet her basic needs (clean clothes, soap). It was also revealed that there is a lack of care for violent inmates, guards neglected her needs, and would not remove self harm materials from her cell until she was already passed out. It also reveals that there is a lot more that needs to be done to care for inmates.

Feelings: This case makes us feel shocked and sad. The most shocking/disturbing feature is that the guards watched and recorded her death rather than intervening. As well, it is frustrating to see the neglect and improper care Ashely received (severe solitary confinement, lack of resources). As well, it is unbelievable to hear that the guards would allow her to self harm and wait until she was passed out until they intervened. It is sad because if she got proper treatment she could have been released and rehabilitated and had her whole life ahead of her.

Future: There needs to be more steps in ensuring inmate safety. There should be more safety procedures in place to prevent her strangulation and ensure she is getting the help she needs for her mental health struggles (ADHD, and BPD). This can be seen by having more mental health professionals, or separate floors/areas for inmates with mental health uses where they can receive proper support. As well, more safety measures need to be in place for guards to intervene in inmates acts of self harm and there needs to be stricter rules/consequences on guard-inmate maltreatment and more guards need to be held accountable (ex. getting fired).

- Amber and Gio, Julia Rivait

Findings of the youth CJS: She was put in solitary confinement, which was not okay. They claimed it would help her, but she was put in an empty room all alone, with no windows etc. Which is not fair. They also added 3 years to her sentence, which did not help her mental health. This showed how the CJS used inappropriate forms of "justice" and claimed it would help when in the end it destroyed her more. They took advantage of their power and did not focus on rehabilitating instead she was locked away in unliveable conditions.

Feelings: We are saddened, angry, and disappointed that this happened. We feel as though it was not fair for Ashley and she was constantly pushed down instead of being lifted up to help her "fix" her life.

Future: Treat them like humans and not have them in unlivable conditions. Focus on their future and be unbiased in situations. Should not abuse their power.

Mattea and Veronica

The youth criminal justice system does not take the mental health of "problem youth" seriously, they would rather punish people for their issues rather than help. There is a lack of resources in many different aspects such as mental health resources and personal hygiene resources, and no outlet to express her trauma and mistreatment.

We felt disturbed and sad by how she was treated and how she never had a chance because she was never given the chance to do better. We are enraged by how the system treated her and let her slip through the cracks. We now feel a distrust of the system.

Having somebody overlooking how the facilities treat the people inside that is not associated with the facilities. This case should not be forgotten and should be kept in the foreground to show what can happen to people that are punished for their mental health.

Rehabilitation should have been conducted but was ignored towards the victim. This took place in solitary confinement where these damages and negligence occurred.

Feelings:
The feeling of hopelessness and sadness towards Ashely Smith. This is the feeling because there is nothing, she could have done because her plea for help was ignored.

Future:
For future references, those that are within the youth justice system should be provided more of a rehabilitation approach instead of punishment and consequences. Mental health is critical amongst these youth individuals that supervision and help is needed for these youths to develop.

Findings: Lack of consistency in the criminal justice system. For example, the officers showed a lack of diligence by not giving cpr and proper hygiene products. Even though Ashley was provided a psychologist, talking to her through the food slot was not an effective form of therapy due to the lack of privacy.

Feelings: Highly negative feelings emerged due to the fact that it could have been avoided. In addition, it makes us doubt that the criminal justice system is as rehabilitative as it says it is.

Future: Mental health issues need to be addressed earlier in the criminal justice system. Further, adequate services need to be provided to those with needs and their dignity needs to be maintained. In addition, segregation laws need to be more outlined because it clearly had a negative effect.

- Hezekiah, Emma, Stephanie

Findings: What this case reveals about the criminal youth justice system is the negligence of the needs of young offenders and the incompetency that can occur which will affect the offenders in the system. It also shows how flawed punitive methods are for young offenders and where the sentencing pushed on Ashley made her conditions worse.
Feelings: Felt surprised and disappointed in hearing that case. Since they did know about her mental health issues and attempts at self harm. Yet they pushed for her to remain in solitary confinement than providing treatment to her in some sort of ways.
Future: More attention to mental health of young offenders. Less reliance on punitive sentencing methods. More accountability on those who work in the criminal justice system.

Findings: Like most institutions, the youth criminal justice system is flawed. Ashley Smith faced severe mistreatment through the lack of care and effort from the guards in providing the appropriate care. Additionally, she was wrongly imprisoned for a minor crime, and should not have been placed in solitary confinement no matter her behaviour due to her age and vulnerability.

Feelings - Our group feels disappointed and saddened by an outcome like this. The youth need to be focused on for the good of out future, especially in cases where mental health issues are prevalent. We feel that Ashely was in a place of hopelessness, and could have used emotional guidance from a figure (in this case a guard) to show her some empathy.

Future - Cases like this should be an example of what should not happen in the future. Facilities should monitor their guards to ensure they are providing the proper care rather than video taping the struggles of inmates. Furthermore, health care services regarding mental health treatment should be prioritized, as possible medication or rehabilitation in treating her mental illnesses should have been improvised
