Design product: We've definitely all been on a long plane ride and felt disgusting and just wanted to wash our faces or brush our teeth. This problem especially affects those who like my dad, travel on business trips regularly and only bring a carry on and stays for over a week so needs easy to bring toiletries for the hotel. My product is like the Swiss army knife of travel and can be used to solve this problem. It is an all in one multifunctional travel toiletry kit that combines different kinds of travel bottles and mini travel kits (such as toothbrush kits, all in one small bottles that can hold different liquid products, cleansing wipes, solid cleansers and more) all into one small portable set.

Design #3 is the chosen design for this project. It is a travel toiletry container with two main compartments: a large one that has 5 compressible tunnel shaped storage space that holds foldable toothbrushes, toothpaste, a razor etc, which meets the specification point of 1.3 (having items that my client specifically requested: toothbrush, razor-if possible). Specification 1.4 states that the travel bottles that would go with the main storage should be less than 100ml which is the requirements for my client’s airline, the second compartment attaches onto the main one and has travel bottles and tubes that are under 100ml. Since the travel bottles are removable, specification point 1.2 would be met, which allows my client to put the individual liquid bottles into a ziplock bag if requested by security check and would make the process easier for him. The main structure would be made out of HDPE plastic and the compressible tunnels would be made out of rubber. These materials makes the product waterproof which the 3 other designs aren’t. Having a waterproof container would benefit my client a lot as toiletries are meant to be used in the bathroom which might make his container wet and this would meet specification 1.6 of having a waterproof container. The size of the product will be 70mm x 700mm x 200mm which meets the specification of 1.1 which is that the product should be smaller then my client’s carry on case of (L:500 x W:150 x H 400 mm) which enables him to carry it onto the plane. The color of the container will be a dark grey and it would not have any patterns which meets my specification point of 1.5, that my client would like a simple preferably single colored container. My design also meets specification point 1.7, of having 5 or more compartments, my design has 6 ( 5 tunnels, 1 storage compartment ) which helps him stay organized with toiletries even when travelling. Since this particular design meets the specifications and my client’s specific needs and requests it is chosen to be the final design.

The particular design was chosen as it fits really well with a human hand. The straight knife handle has dents that mimic the spots where a person will place their hands while using the knife to let others have a more conformable and stable grip while cutting.

Ergonomics wise the knife is very effective as the dents with the shape of human fingers let the user cut comfortably while resting their fingers in the dents and stably as they now have a grip to hold. However, length wise the knife just fits the size of my hand which is too small for the average human adult and this may cause them to grip the blade and cut themselves easily. Also, the finger grips could be placed in more carefully planned out areas as it although does function properly, they are too tight and spaced differently from the average human hand, making gripping harder than intended.

After that was completed I used sand paper to further smoothen the sides at a smaller scale. This is the first time apart from the knife task that I shaved foam block so I had to be very careful to not rip the foam apart. Later, I used a round rasp to shave down the excess foam inside the tunnels.

But only concern is toothbrush part might be loose and no toothpaste place.

3.Does the size of the product match your needs and will efficiently store your items in your travel case without being too bulky?

Yes, size right now is good, will fit in travel bag also perfect size for holding.

4.Would you bring this product with you on business trips to effectively store your toiletries?

Yes, everything will be put in one easy place and can carry on with right requirement 100ml to plane.

5.Does the specific compartments fit/match with the products you usually bring?

Yes, the toothbrush and hair gel part I told about is on product. But maybe if other long item placing area is included, maybe like small hair brush, it will be better.

In the middle, I started a foam block prototype incase I wasn't able to print my product. However, I started that too late which left me with little time to finish it. Therefore, next time I should have a clear backup plan incase my original plan cannot be implemented so that I will save a lot of time and unnecessary effort.

I mostly achieved my design goal as I created a functional, mostly innovative and sleek product that suited my client's needs and solves the problem of feeling uncomfortable on a plane and storing small toiletries for carry on being a hassle both security wise and space wise. Overall, my product would decrease my client's hassle while carrying on small toiletries in the plane or at the hotel for regular business trips. As suggested by my client test, this was due to the many tailored compartments to my client's usual travel products as I understood his needs well (a fitted toothbrush compartment, another for shaving and finally a larger detachable compartment for small bottles). However, to fully achieve my design goal I would need to incorporate even more innovative compartments inside my design (such as tablet face wash) for my client to have an ever better flight and hotel experience.

My product would not have a substantial impact on my target audience compared to my client (business travelers) as my product is mostly tailored to my clients needs. However, the general toiletries that most business travelers could carry (common items) would fit inside my product. Also, based on the "flight" test, the toothbrush compartment is not extremely sturdy at holding the toothbrush in and with improvement it can serve its purpose better such as adding a convex section on the end to fit the toothbrush on.

Specifically, my client added that if the effectiveness of the toothbrush compartment is improved and more of them are added for other long items such as a small hairbrush compartment, it would almost completely suit his needs and will be even more effective at solving the problem of uncomfortable plane rides and hassles while packing toiletries.
