When performing dynamics, it is important to maintain tone and intonation. Because tone is the first thing we teach, we extend that to intonation (in tune-ness) and challenge them to maintain tone while playing in tune. We then extend that to dynamics and challenge them to play at various levels of volume while maintaining the first two concepts. Before we extend the concept, we ask them to think about what the next concept is and how they think they can accomplish it. We attempt it, reflect on it, discuss why it worked or didn't work, and try again.
