Artist: Mohamed E.

Portfolio Title: Observations in Graphite

Artist Biography

Hello, I'm Mohamed and I’m a student at NOVA, where I’m pursuing a focus in Visual Arts and Graphic Design. Drawing has always been a key part of how I observe and interpret the world around me. I started with simple sketches and gradually developed my skills through formal instruction and independent study.

At NOVA, I’ve explored different materials and techniques, but I’m most drawn to pencil, charcoal, and ink for their raw and expressive qualities. Each assignment and exercise has helped me refine my ability to capture form, light, and emotion through line and value. Whether I’m drawing a folded shirt, a facial expression, or the shape of a car, I focus on the details that make each subject unique.

Artist Statement

Drawing is my foundation. It’s how I slow down and focus on what’s right in front of me. My work is mostly observational—capturing figures, faces, objects, and shapes from real life—but I see each drawing as more than a study. It’s a way to communicate presence, emotion, or rhythm through something as simple as a graphite line.

In this portfolio, I’ve included drawings that range from portraiture to still life and design sketches. Each one reflects a different way I’ve practiced seeing: how light falls across fabric, how to balance proportion in a human figure, or how perspective can give a car sketch structure and energy. These works represent my growth not just in technique but in artistic awareness—understanding how composition, tone, and style work together.

As a graphic design student, I also think about layout and clarity, which helps me when translating real-world observation into clean, intentional visuals. Ultimately, drawing is where my ideas begin, and it will always be a central part of how I make and think about art.

Description of the Work

This drawing portfolio is a collection of observational works completed during my time at NOVA. It includes:

A detailed still life with folded clothing and personal objects

Expressive graphite portraits with focus on shading and emotion

A full-body figure sketch using colored pencil

A perspective-based car design rendered in line

A profile drawing exploring contour and form

Each piece reflects my commitment to developing strong foundational skills while also expressing individuality through form, tone, and structure.
