I am not much of a reader as I prefer numbers over words, which is one of the reasons i chose Accounting as my degree. I would much faster pick up a Math book over an English one. When thinking of a topic to do, I wanted to do a topic that would be different from the mainstream and also I wanted a topic that meant something to me, something I would learn from. When i went to my tutor Charissa and gave her my idea she suggested that I do the after-effects of slavery. After reading Beyond Massa by Dr. John Campbell and learning about slavery, as I did not know much about it from before and also learning his and other revisionist perspectives, I realised how much slavery has impacted the Caribbean on a whole, my country Trinidad and Tobago and even my life. To think, my ancestors went through all of that just for me to have the type of life i enjoy today. I, personally, would not have been able to endure all that they went through, the abuse, the oppression etc. The course changed my outlook on the Caribbean as there is so much beauty and history that is the Caribbean. I am truly grateful for Dr. Campbell and Miss Charissa Alexis for all their teachings and help and I am thankful that the University made me do this course as a foundation course. It is the reason our society is so diverse. People of different races, religions and more all living together in one place and experiencing and enjoying each other's culture and its practices. The way the Caribbean and the people living here operate today is the after-effects of slavery. Schools should teach more about slavery and its effects to everyone and not just those who choose subjects like History. Everyone living in the Caribbean should be knowledgeable of what occurred.
