Germany and the Soviet union were creating a non aggressive pact. They did this because foreign ministers of both countries had contained a secret protocol that divided Eastern Europe into spheres. This agreement made sure that Hitler would not face a two-front war. The pact also made sure that other countries and leaders could focus there time to prepare for future conflicts. No one expected the pact and it shocked everyone. Germany's invasion on Poland marked the beginning of World War 2. The pact had long term consequences and had characteristics that characterized the pre war period.

Under Hitlers control Germany invaded Poland using lots of power and overwhelming Poland. Hitler was trying to expand his powers and establish dominance. Poland tried fighting back but overall could not gain power over Germany's strong forces. The invasion lead Britain and France to declare war on Germany and led to lots of losses and deaths.

Even though the French had a larger army and had created the Maginot line, the German invasion caught them off guard. They created a surprise attack through the Ardennes Forest and they bypassed they Maginot line. In a matter of weeks Paris fell and France had to surrender. The fall of France was a big devastation and a triumphant for Germany.
