That percentage of Americans were split into three groups: people with left-wing political opinions who wanted an NLF victory, pacifists who opposed all wars, and liberals who believed that stopping the spread of communism should be by encouraging democratic governments. There was a march to Washington in December, 1964; it was the largest anti-war demonstration in American history. As the war progressed the united states used chemical weapons, Napalm and Agent Orange, which turned more Americans against the war. In addition to the U.S. using chemical warfare, they also were  found guilty of torturing captured prisoners and innocent civilians. Turning more Americans against the war. In November, 1965, Norman Morrison, followed the example of Thich Quang Due, and publicly burnt himself to death. In the following weeks, two other pacifists, Roger La Porte and Alice Herz, immolated themselves in protest against the war. Another example of an American protesting would be David Miller, In 1965 Miller publicly burnt his draft card and was sentenced to two and a half years in prison. His actions inspired others and throughout Anti-Vietnam War groups organised meetings where large groups of young men would burn their draft cards. When there were mass card burnings a Civil Rights activist pointed out, in many southern states of America, blacks were being denied the right to vote in elections. Therefore, blacks were fighting in Vietnam for something they don't have for themselves. After that point was made, in the late 1960s several cities in the U.S. suffered violent riots in black ghettos. As the war came to a close and the Soldiers returned home In 1967, the "Vietnam Veterans Against the War" was formed. Vietnam heroes threw away their medals they had won fighting in the war. One shouted: "Here's my merit badges for murder." Bush, avoided the draft during the Vietnam War by getting the position as a National Guard. Officials from Kent state tried to ban the rally but were unsuccessful. As the protesters began protesting, members of the National Guard deployed tear gas on them. Due to wind, the tear gas was useless. angered by the National guards protesters threw back the canisters of gas and rocks. Some protesters even went as far as yelling things like "Pigs off campus!", to the soldiers. Eventually, seventy-seven soldiers attacked the riot of protesters with rifles and bayonets. Protesters continued to throw things at the soldiers. Twenty-nine soldiers eventually opened fire, lasting just thirteen seconds, even though some witnesses say that it lasted more than one minute. The troops fired sixty-seven shots total and when the firing ended, nine students laid wounded, and four students had been killed.
