When I first considered this experiment, I knew it was going to be difficult. I thought about when I should conduct this and made the decision to not do this during a class where I need to participate in discussion or a time where I had to got to work. I just started training for a new job and needed to be able to communicate with my boss and co-workers about anything I need help with. Because of these considerations, I already knew this would be a humbling experience.

I decided to participate in the experiment during my math class and ISTC because I knew that not speaking would not effect my grade for participation that day. I still did have to speak and answer questions and collaborate with peers, however. To do this, I had to write a lot or gesture a lot. I even used some sign language with friends I knew would understand it.

Without speaking, I felt like everything I wanted to say was not being fully heard. I had to face an additional challenge in not only developing an understanding of the content but also having to think of how I might present what I have to say in a way that people will understand, I felt like no matter the method I used, people would still misunderstand or simply not know what I was trying to say at all. This made me feel frustrated, and I would even just give up or not try to express myself.

I now have a better understanding of the challenged people face when they cannot speak. They feel discouraged from participating and frustrated when they try to do so. I can see how one would have breakdowns from the stress of this alone. I found myself thinking about students who need a communication board and only have a small selection of words to choose from. They are never able to fully communicate what their needs, wants, or ideas.

I kept thinking about this video and how helpful these devises are. These technological advances have made communication easier for many students and allows them to share their abilities with others. They are still very limiting.
