Chronic Pain Culture

Depending on the time of the year, I deal with chronic migraines at least half of the time, usually more, rarely less. Over the years I have tried dozens of different medications, remedies, diets, and practices, with no luck of any type of relief. I’ve had to suffer through migraines while working 60 hours a week and going to school. It’s unfortunately become a major disability that I’ve just had to deal with. I’ve been surprised at the amount of people who also deal with chronic migraines. Although I have yet to find relief, I have found a large community that I can look to find support.

I grew up Christian and I am still christian. With growing up in a small town, unfortunately there was extreme beliefs and judgments and unfortunately I didn’t know any differently until I moved away. Like I explained in my small town culture, I never felt like I fit in and religion was a big part of it. Over the past few years, I have gone away from the extreme beliefs and connected with christian beliefs that better fit my beliefs and what feel right.

Music + Concert Culture

I love music. I have an obsession with songwriters and care more about lyrics than anything else. I’ve been to many different concerts and I am all about concert culture. When I was in junior high, I was convinced I would be the next Taylor Swift andI even recorded a short album. While my dreams have changed, I still love music and still play the guitar when I get the chance. I love discovering new songwriters, and looking into meaning and stories behind songs and music.

Small Town Culture

I grew up in an extremely small town here in Utah. My neighborhood was surrounded by dairy farms and everyone knew everyone. I never felt like I belonged in this small town. Every chance I would get I would drive to a bigger city, even if it was just to Orem (which was a big deal compared to my little town). As soon as I was able, I moved to Salt Lake City. I never realized how extremely sheltered I had grown up. Living in Salt Lake City forced me to really learn how to love people. I don’t like to claim the small town as my home, but it was where I grew up and what stemmed my immense love for city culture! I love being able to have everything you need within a block of you, from grocery stores, gyms, school etc. I love the diversity of a city. I love the busyness of the city. I feel the most like myself in the city culture!

All throughout junior high and high school I was on the track and cross country team. I was the girl who ran 6 miles on an easy day before a race. I loved the community of my team and valued the friendships. I wasn't athletic and didn't fit in with many different groups at school, but the running culture was where I felt like I belonged! Unfortunately stopped running my senior year because of health conditions, but have recently gotten back into it. I by no means am running like I used to and enjoy running a mile or two to clear my head and just start my day outside.
