There are numerous gestures present within a Catholic funeral. A Thruible is a metal enclosure connected to a chain that has smoke inside and is used as a form of worship after a person passes away in the Catholic faith. This object is swung back and fourth to bless the casket at the end of Funeral mass. Another gesture from the priest is the blessing of the casket where a priest raises his hand slightly to bless the departed. This also occurs at the end of the funeral mass before the casket is carried out.

The people that are involved in a funeral include the priest or deacon, mourners of the deceased person and funeral planners. Catholic funerals usually involve a funeral director to aid in planning the funeral which also allows the family and friends of the deceased person to mourn after the death as Catholic funerals occur shortly after the death. The mourners at a funeral are normally the friends and family of the person who has passed. These people use the funeral as a time to pay respect and celebrate the life of the person who has passed. The mourners of the deceased person usually make up most of the attendance at a funeral. The priest at a funeral is there to give Eucharist (if communion is given at the funeral) and to lead the mourners in prayer. Priests often bless the casket and are present at the graveside.
