We talked about emphasizing predictability vs. quantity of interactions. Using announcements with comment options instead of a Q&A discussion. Getting students to navigate the way they're supposed to without being strict with prereqs. Tools that are outside of Canvas -- how do we make sure it's seen in a review?

Many students mention to me that they are very pleased that I participate in the actual discussions and that often times other professors are 'invisible'. They feel seen and heard when we are respond in the discussions.

One of us uses small groups, replies to whole small group, maybe replies to individuals in the small group
A couple of us use whole class discussions and require them to come back a few different days. We respond to a few students each time.
Pose fewer questions, give options, give each small group a question
A couple of us grade them using rubrics and no written comments. Depending on the discussion grammar might be checked and written feedback given depending on the discussion content, but most of the time interested in the interaction

This is a typical format for my weekly discussions. They add a paragraph with module citations (to help discourage AI use). It keeps it really open ended for reflection on different parts of the module. I answer all "muddy points" on the board as well as curiosity questions which are actively encouraged in the instructions. I find these discussions to be FANTASTIC! Students ask great questions and I end up in quite a bit of interaction with them. If peers answer a muddy point, I use the thumbs up feature to affirm. I also require a two-day posting for 100% or more which really helps to encourage more interaction both with me and between peers.

In addition to "message students who" reminders, and periodic emails to students who have fallen below a 70%, for all my online courses I provide a specific assignment that allows students to individually reflect on how they are doing in the class, what they are liking, any problems, and how they feel about their grade as well as their goals. I reply back with individual replies with feedback and an overall grade assessment with suggestions for improvement if they want this.

Respond to students in class discussions. I also like to comment on their answers in the grading section. And summarize important notes in weekly announcements to review the lesson.

It is way more fun when I get my unsolicited recognition in the Rate my professor app and when the students are noticing the personalized feedback in the Comments, especially when they have a small mistakes that can be immediately corrected.

DBs as communication tool:

I have students introduce themselves and answer some icebreaker Q in the Canvas DB the first week of class. I respond to all of them and they need to respond to 2 classmates. I also survey them using Canvas survey/quiz tool (i.e. “would you rather” questions, how they feel about writing) and share the results in an announcement. I would also like to try this midsemester in small groups to have them reconnect

Struggle with encouraging substantive comments from students. One person in our group uses a prompt for the initial replies and a prompt for the replies to classmates. Another challenge was asking students to post their initial reply on the first day and wait to come back another day so everyone has a chance to post that first reply and get a chance to be seen when they start replying to each other.

Everyone in our group used "Message Students Who" in the grade book to remind students who have not turned in an assignment. If no response, follow up with email. Messaging to ask how a student is doing (are you okay? are you safe and well?) before getting into their grades/assignments. We also used Early Alert, letting students know in the syllabus that tool is used and when the alert goes out (for Kudos and concerns) sending an announcement telling them to keep an eye out for emails from counselors.

I use the Canvas survey/quiz tool a few times a term to ask students how they're doing (rate their day, rate their feelings about the content, ask what activity helped/hurt them in the course so far, and ask an open question of if there is anything they want to ask/tell me

Having the lessons not too long but to the point and then a separate page to do another point helps emphasize core objectives of the lesson.

Using the "Who" button to congratulate students on starting a discussion or nudging a student reminding them they need to complete the discussion.

I use Announcements weekly. At the end of the week I send out an announcement that includes a short review of the previous week's work, some talked-about points, and a brief introduction of what to expect for the upcoming week with a link to that week's module.
