- The book is set in a Dystonia world, making freedom already limited. The author brings up points of segregation, 'government control', and the lack of freedom. Being in factions takes away the freedom of the people, and limits their lives to one thing/focus; the morals of the faction.

Message - Will

Evidence/Quotes:
- They are separated into factions
- Once you choose your faction, that's it, there is no going back.
- "Faction before blood"
- You have to stay in your factions 'headquarters', and are not allowed to visit family.
-
- They teach them to fear being factionless, and the factionless are free from the system/aren't under control.
- They don't want people to be free, so they can control them.

"You know why," my father says, "Because we have something they want. Valuing knowledge above all else results in a lust for power, and that leads men into dark and empty places. We should be thankful that we know better." (pg. 35)

Power- this shows that people lust for power and authority. sometimes people's high roles/ positions in our society, goes to their heads and can lead to corruption.. This quote basically proves that just like people can have a love of money, they can also have a love of power.

Eric shows abuse of power by making the Dauntless initiates complete dangerous tasks. Just because he has the power and authority.

Jeanine abuses her power of leadership, by using her knowledge to put the Dauntless members under simulation, to control their every move. Her initial plan is to annihilate the Abnegation, therefore giving her full power over all the factions.

The author is trying to say that power can be dangerous if it gets into the wrong hands.

eg. Jeanine and Eric both used their leadership roles/positions and abused their power that harmed a lot of people and lead to the resolution of the factions.
