I have made changes into my practice as a result of my learning as I have discovered that consumers have the capacity to recover quickly from difficulties as resilience is a defence mechanism

Having not completed the Recovery Oriented Mental Health Practice subject and working outside of nursing, my experiences of resilience may be different to others. I work with young people who engage in offending, many of whom have low levels of resilience and therefore offend to cope with trauma, mental health issues, desire to belong etc. Resilience building is therefore an important part of my work with them. I endeavour to do this through strength-based work to create a balance between acknowledging and addressing the negative behaviours they have engaged in but differentiating the behaviour from who they are as a person. I ensure that I identify and develop the young people's strengths and positive coping strategies to build their resilience to future challenges.

Resilience in individuals with whom I interact in my daily nursing life is now more easily identified and promoted through a greater understanding of its biopsychosocial underpinnings. I am fortunately in the position through my work within a dual diagnosis rehabiliation unit, to positively promote exercise, nutrition, resilience practices and training, and identification of childhood issues which may have negatively impacted on the ability to re resilient. It is now at the forefront of my interactions with clients

I quite often remind the person of their resilience. There are always many positive attributes related to resilience and sometimes one needs reminding of just how resilient they are and have been. Many people build up resilience due to environmental factors (as are my consumers who live in isolated desert areas), others become strong through repeated exposure to stressors (poverty, hunger, heat), still others become resilient while working through illness and recovery. It is important to build resilience by encouraging good health and exercise regimes
