In the mural that has the word Soweto in graffiti style, there is an African person shown with bright vivid colors, images of nature, and symbols of strength. This image would be an empowering image for the people of the neighborhood because it celebrates their specific culture, history, and identity. Like Trevor Noah says, ghettos are often places where people feel stuck and hopeless because they did not choose to be there. This image transforms the ghetto from a colorless place of repression to a vibrant place of power and beauty.

The murals on the cooling towers depict positive scenes of everyday life and achievement among the local community. The fact that this art is on cooling towers that provide the power that is essential for modern life allows the people to define themselves as essential in the same way. They are a vital part of the lifeblood of the community just the same way the power from the plant provides life. It shows that they are essential and here to stay.
