Modern gadgets aid mankind in every aspect of life including education. In the past few years, the application of paperless education has increased especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. Remote learning is the only initiative to continue the teaching and learning process in all levels of education so that students can resume their studies at home. Paperless learning includes the usage of laptops, smartphones, and also tablets. One of the popular tablets used by students nowadays are Apple’s iPad. Initially, I did not feel the need to own a tablet because I feel like papers are more practical and effective in learning. A lot foolscap papers and pens were used as tools to help me with my learning process at home during the pandemic. As time passes, I realized that I was wrong. The iPad is one of the most helpful gadgets I have ever owned. I no longer have to scramble through files and folders in my shelf to search for documents as I can save it in the iCloud Drive safely without worrying about losing data. Not only that I saved time from having to search, but I also saved money from having to buy papers, ink and cartridges to print documents. This indirectly reduces the waste that I produce everyday. It might not make a big difference but I believe that this decline in waste production will help save a few trees by reducing my carbon footprint. Moreover, I do not have to panic anymore about accidently leaving books in my room as I leave for class. Nowadays, the production and republishing of text books in their digital forms are accessible for students on the Internet. Plus, I also purchased an additional accessory which is the Apple Pencil. I feel more motivated and driven to learn and complete my assignments as I can bring the tablet wherever I go. The most important part of having an iPad is that it made me value and appreciate time. It is a shame that I did not see this opportunity beforehand during the pandemic.

Paper consumption usually doubles every five years for average companies, which is very concerning. We lose more trees than we plant each year, and we need to do something about it. Going paperless might not going to solve the problem anytime soon, but it is definitely a step in the right direction. Thankfully, our government has launched a program called Peranti Siswa. It is an initiative where the government distribute tablets with pencils to needy students who could not afford to buy them. Now, almost all my classmates use tablets in class which made me feel really happy for them. 

To conclude, quality education is a fundamental human right that all students deserve to have access to. One of the measures to boost this 4th Sustainable Development Goal by the United Nations are digital learning.
