17th, September online lecture by Dr.Karwan: Effective classroom management

Effective classroom management can create a positive learning

First, we started the lecture with a Question by Dr.Karwan:
What are the principles and discipline of classroom management?
The answer was from the student as follows:

Aim of the course and outcomes

student attendance at the time

Quiz style

Habits in the classroom like; chewing gum, using mobile phones, and bringing hot drinks and food to the classroom.

Effective classroom management environment:

Fosters an environment that supports academic, social, and emotional learning;

Facilitates a structured and organized environment where students can focus on learning;

Builds trust, healthy relationships between instructors and students, and peer-to-peer among students.

Maintains attention and fosters motivation and engagement;

Minimizes disruption and interference with learning

How instructors can have an influence on
classroom ecology?

The instructor can have a big influence on the ecology of the classroom by:

Attending to many of these factors through course and lesson planning.

Being "with it": scan the room and be aware of what is happening at all times.

Overlapping: do more than one thing at a time, such as maintaining eye contact and using proximity to keep attention.

Momentum; teach well-prepared and briskly paced lessons that keep attention.

Keep the group alert and accountable: use teaching techniques that keep students' attention and reduce predictability.

Offer varied and challenging assignments: different ways to use their minds
at the right level of difficulty

Important considerations

Classroom management can often feel like a battle for control between students and instructors. If it starts to feel that way for you, it's time to reflect on your approach.

Are your rules consistent with your larger purpose and learning outcomes? Do they promote or hinder student motivation? Are any of your rules or Are procedures unnecessarily rigid or punitive?

What degree of control do you need to have and in what areas? How should you balance control for maintaining a healthy group order with individual student needs for control over their own learning?

How can you promote individual and collective responsibility for learning?

How are you building a community of learners?

How do outside factors (e.g. time of day, classroom location, weather, etc.) affect your class mood and behavior?

What will be more important for you to do in large classes vs. small classes, or lecture vs. lab/studio classes?

How do you show respect for yourself and your students in your respective roles?

Establish an effective environment in the class

A. Plan your first impression carefully through:

Introduce yourself.

Offer an icebreaker to relax students and encourage
interaction.

Teach something; immediately begin to engage students in the course.

Take class time to review the syllabus and emphasize important aspects.

Expect some students to come in late. They're getting lost, too!

Consider setting community rules (e.g., regarding phones, laptops, talking, sleeping, eating, late arrivals, and early departures) with the students.

Start learning names right away; anonymity discourages student engagement.

B. Interact with students regularly

Greet students as they enter the classroom

Chat with them for a few moments- Consider opening the class with a brief

Intersperse lecture with discussion, group work, or video segments to encourage involvement and help students connect the content with real world events and issues

Ask questions (giving plenty of wait time) and respond to student comments

Make eye contact with as many students as possible during class

C. Be ready to respond to challenges:

The best way to avoid challenges in the classroom is to anticipate the possibilities ahead of time and plan accordingly.

How can you encourage students to become engaged?

Give weekly quizzes, reflection papers, or homework.

Clarify concepts and help with problem-solving.

Grade class participation.

Flip the classroom.

Make expectations clear.

Call on students by name.

Respond positively and encourage elaboration.

Introduce active learning exercises.

Give think time before expecting students to respond to questions.

Show your enthusiasm: Students will participate more often If their instructors engage actively in the discussion and show that they genuinely value participation.

Presentations

In the beginning, Dr.Miran started the lecture by informing us that today apart from the presentation there would be a special guest giving us his experience about micro-teaching and classroom management according to his classroom principles and classroom discipline and telling us his experience.
After that, Dr.Miran asked us to prepare some questions about teaching, classroom management, and the pedagogy process.
later on, the presentation started in the first session of the lecture by some of us. overall the presentations were well-prepared and we got great benefits from the teacher's advice.
In the second part of the lecture, after welcoming Dr.Sarkawt and his introduction by Dr.Miran, he started his lecture with an amazing show that he had made and it was not expected by us about a teacher who had not good experience and bad skills in teaching.
Then, he started his lecture about microteaching and what are the principles and discipline that he used in teaching. Nearly it was the same as we had previously taught by Dr.Karwan and Dr.Miran.
Finally, he opened a discussion panel and we asked the questions that we had already prepared before in the first session.

I think it was a great idea for the teacher to bring on an expert person in the higher education teaching field and to abbreviate the experience that he had obtained during his teaching journey for decades of years.
