Fluency is the ability to read a text accurately, quickly, and with expression. Some ways to encourage fluency instruction in the classroom is through exposing children to a range of texts, as well as, allowing students to engage in oral reading, partner reading, and/or choral reading.

Modeling fluent reading helps a student learn how written text should sound in addition to supporting their understanding of the written text. Reading out loud lets the student hear the correct pronunciation before their turn at oral reading.

Fluency instruction should include both oral and individual reading, as well as model reading. Oral reading should include reading passages aloud with assistance for a teacher or parent. Through modeling, the student can hear how a readers voice can add understanding to a text.

Fluency instruction should resemble the teacher introducing words, practicing these words over and over, and eventually timing each student on a reading passage including the words they had learned. Eventually with practice of sounding new words out, will determine how well a studnet was able to sound out and read new words on their own.
