Through college I was able to be apart of the student support services office labled as POWER. At Minot State University, this is offered to students who fit one of three criteria- learning difficulties, first generation college student, or financial aid recipent. Through this office I was exposed to many different Mentors- a dream for a college student seeking help- as well as being afforded the opportunity to mentor a fellow student myself. What I understand mentoring to be: A personal relationship built on the trust and understanding of two people with the shared goal of furthering both futures in social, business, educational, or emotional sections. After having an amazing co-teacher at one student-teacher placement, and a so-so one at another, I can better understand the importance of having not only an informed mentor, but one who actively engages in all aspects of teaching, forming, and learning through the partnership. In what aspects is a mentor-mentee relationship most effective to a new teacher- when does it stop being a crutch and start being a trampoline?

Being a specialist teacher, I wonder about mentorships provided between schools or systems. I have no parallel teacher in either school to help guide me in my teaching methods that are content specific, so how and when could I become a mentor?

When does age stop being an issue? I need to schedule meetings at least a week ahead of time and have an outline or log of what we will discuss.  There may be times when we have to leave the log and I will just have to listen and help my mentee be more resilient and help them with their emotions.  I also need to find a library of resources that can help both my mentee and myself when we need to find a solution to a problem. We do have a small one on our website
 You have made one available to us during this class. Can  we  access it even when we are not taking the class? I now have new ways in which to help me be resilient.  The steps to getting through difficult emotions is one of them.  Finally, I know that there are teachers that can help me in my building and I am going to go to them for help.

It is an interesting question, as I feel I've developed in many ways. Understanding the importance of building community with those around us, the importance of being prepared and ready to help new teachers, building our own resiliency so we can lead by example... the list goes on! 
 
Parts that stick out for me from our book and course work include: clear communication as an aid in truly understanding what we are saying, listening to, and absorbing information. Looking for the bright spots is harder because of BRAIN SCIENCE and hard-wired neurons, not just attitudes. How we see the struggles and challenges is a CHOICE. We can learn from ANY situation as long as we are willing to put in the work.

It is using mentor language that shows you are truly listening and are there to help. At our school we are fortunate to have common planning time twice a week. If your school does not have this, it would be important to set up a schedule when to regularly meet. Having a plan and keeping a log is essential when meeting with your mentee.      Furthermore, I now recognize the importance of balancing work and home.  I need to remember that it is necessary to also take care of myself if I am going to be any good to anyone else.  I still have a long way to go but I believe that I have taken the first steps to I need to take to get there!
