She takes time to educate him about the house and where they are. This can be seen from:” ‘thats the name of the house,” explained gretel. ‘Out-With’. “ This shows that even though they had differences, they could both work together and understand each other in this undesirable situation.

- Anielka

In my opinion, Gretel is not that great of a sister to Bruno, but they do get to know each other better and their communication definitely improves when they are at Out-With. It might be partially because they only have each other to talk to and no one else. They both can finally agree on something for once which is seen in:” …’ i hate it here.’ Gretel looked at her little brother and found herself agreeing with him for once .” The phrase ‘ agreeing with him for once’ shows that they never usually talk let alone ‘agree’ or something as they barely strike up conversation. Either that or Gretel is usually too busy ‘bullying’ Bruno with her friends to really care about him.

        - Anielka

Although she is sometimes known as 'hopeless case' and can be rude at times, and her friends being mean to Bruno, she can understand her brother too. This can be seen " 'It's horrible,' said Bruno. 'Well, yes,' said Gretel, acknowledging that." This shows that at times they commiserate over how much they dislike their new circumstance. Thus I think that Gretel can be quite acknowledging at times.

This can be seen, "She spent far too long in the bathroom in the morning for one thing, and didn't seem ti mind if Bruno was left out side, hopping from foot to foot, desperate to go." This shows that the relationship between Bruno and Gretel is not warm and loving as Gretel would have cared for his younger brother to let him use the bathroom, and not take so long. Also, another evidence can be seen that their relationship is cold and distant is, "Bruno didn't like to admit that he was honest with himself... -he would have admitted that he was." From this, i can tell that Bruno is intimidated by his sister, this shows that their relationship is distant. Thus, the relationship between Bruno and Gretel is cold and distant.

Chapter 3 states “She spent far too long in the bathroom in the mornings for one thing, and didn’t seem to mind if Bruno was left outside, hopping from foot to foot, desperate to go.” This tells me that Gretal was very self-centred as the bathroom was not only hers, yet she spent so long inside, not caring about Bruno’s need to go to the toilet. Chapter 3 also states “ ‘Then why are you so small?’ asked the monster. ’All the other nine year olds are bigger than you.’ This was true and was a sore point for Bruno. It was a source of constant disappointment to him as he wasn’t as tall as any of the other boys in class.” This tells me that Gretal was harsh as she made Bruno feel insecure about himself. Therefore, I think that Gretal is a really self-centered and harsh sister.

Chapter 3 states “ ‘Don’t you want to see them?’ ‘Of course I do,’ she replied and walked hesitantly towards him. ‘Step out of the way then,’ she said, elbowing him aside.” This shows that instead of telling Bruno to step aside politely, Gretel ended up elbowing him, telling him to step aside. If their relationship was a warm and loving one, Gretel would have kindly told Bruno. Thus, Gretal and Bruno’s relationship is a rather cold and distant one.

This tells me that Gretel would spend a long time in the bathroom with considering about whether Bruno needed to use it or not. Another evidence in chapter 3 states, " 'It is horrible right now. But once the house is smartened up a bit it probably won't seem so bad. I heard Father say that whoever lived here at Out-With before us lost their job very quickly and didn't have time to make the place nice for us.' " This shows that Gretel tried to encouraged Bruno that staying at Out-With wasn't so bad as what he had thought it will be.

Bruno and Gretel’s relationship is likely not very close. This is shown to me in chapter 3 where it states that “Bruno didn’t like to admit that he was a little scared of her, but if he was honest with himself - which he always tried to be - he would have admitted he was.” As Bruno is a little scared of Gretel, it is safe to say that they would not have a fun and protective relationship with Gretel. Gretel also underestimates Bruno as seen in chapter 4 where she says, “How will you know ? When you get to my age you’ll understand better.” This shows that she thinks she is always right as she is older and they do not have a relationship where they can trust each other - Gretel doesn’t trust Bruno.

zI personally do not think Gretel is a good sister to Bruno as she doesn’t help him and she is very rude to him. When Bruno entered her room without knocking, she shouted at him saying,”What are you doing in here? Don’t you know you don’t enter a lady’s room without knocking?” Although she is right that he should’ve knocked, she could’ve said it to Bruno in a nicer tone and not have shouted at him which comes off as mean. When Bruno was “hopping from foot to foot, desperate to go”, she didn’t care about him and still continued to “spend far too long in the bathroom in the mornings for one thing”. This shows me that she didn’t care about Bruno which tells me that she is not a very good sister.

The gloomy atmosphere in the chapter is portrayed in the difference between the two sides of the fence. Irony is used as the prisoner side of the fence is a total opposite of the outside world. On the outside of the fence, there was grass, flowers which grew in neatly ordered sections in soil and a very pleasant pavement with a wooden bench on it. However, 20 feet further along from the garden and the flowers, past the fence, it was totally different. There wasn’t any grass or greenery and the ground was made of a sand-like substance. This shows the gloomy atmosphere in Out-With and how irony helps portray it.

When Gretel's friends made fun of of Brunos height and age, she did not care and instead joined them. "This was true, and a particular sore point for Bruno. It was a source of disappointment to him that he wasn't as tall as any of the other boys in his class." This shows that Gretel does not care about Brunos feelings and enjoys making fun of him even though she knew that this topic is very hurtful for Bruno and that Bruno is ashamed about it.

i think that the relationship Bruno and Gretel is cold and distant. "Bruno didn’t like to admit that he was a little scared of her, but if he was completely honest with himself-which he always tried to be-he would have admitted that he was.” This shows that Bruno was afraid of Gretel, meaning that he was not close to her. If bruno and Gretel had a close relationship, Bruno will not be afraid of telling gretel what hes thinking and how he's feeling. "for a moment wished that Gretel would sit down beside him and put her arm around him and tell him that it was going to be all right.” This shows that Bruno only wished that Gretel would comfort him in that situation, meaning that he knew that Gretel would not do so and could only wish for it to happen. Hence, their relationship is cold and distant.

I feel that Gretel is not really a good sister to Bruno. When her friend's came over, they would often make fun of his height when her mother and Maria was not around. " Bruno's not nine, he's only six." and "why are you so small" were comments that Gretel's friends made. Even though Gretel did not make the comments, she laughed along with her friends and didn't even stand up for him when those comments made Bruno feel upset and insecure about himself. Hence I feel that Gretel is not really a good sister to Bruno.

One of the literary devices used was irony to portray a gloomy atmosphere in this chapter. " About twenty feet further along from the garden and the flowers and the bench with the plaque on it, everything changed. This shows on his side of the fence, the surroundings were beautiful. But the phrase "everything changed" signifies the drastic change of surroundings at the other side of the fence. The other side of the fence must have looked very gloomy which had made the author feel that the surrounding had changed. Hence this was the dramatic irony used.
