She takes time to educate him about the house and where they are. This can be seen from:” ‘thats the name of the house,” explained gretel. ‘Out-With’. “ This shows that even though they had differences, they could both work together and understand each other in this undesirable situation.

  • Gretel and Bruno’s relationship is rather cold and distant. Although, i think that their relationship improved a little bit at Out-With. The evidence for the sibling being cold and distant is:” Now get off my bedspread. You’re messing it up.” This shows that Gretel is very dismissive over Bruno and won’t even let him sit on her bed for awhile and wants to ‘shoo’ him out of her personal space.

  • In my opinion, Gretel is not that great of a sister to Bruno, but they do get to know each other better and their communication definitely improves when they are at Out-With. It might be partially because they only have each other to talk to and no one else. They both can finally agree on something for once which is seen in:” …’ i hate it here.’ Gretel looked at her little brother and found herself agreeing with him for once .” The phrase ‘ agreeing with him for once’ shows that they never usually talk let alone ‘agree’ or something as they barely strike up conversation. Either that or Gretel is usually too busy ‘bullying’ Bruno with her friends to really care about him.

  • The wire fence symbolises a division between the ‘better off’ ( Bruno and his family ) and the ‘ prisoners ‘ . This fence divides the areas so that they are unable to cross over or even interact. This provides somewhat of a feeling of elitetism. As the wealthier ones can look down upon the ‘ prisoners ‘ and their poor living conditions.
