In addition to gaining firsthand experience of student life at UMass, participants in this summer’s program will take part in our long developed programming including Writing Labs, Craft Sessions, Participant Readings, Writer’s Life Talks, and Write-alongs, and field trips to destinations associated with the poets, writers and activists who made Western Mass their home.

Each academy instructor is also a working journalist, so what’s taught is grounded in real-life experience. Each lesson is tied to its practical application, by giving students actual reporting assignments. Each day is a sample of life as a news reporter.

Project Pull interns get professional mentorship in STEAM jobs.  They build a foundation for success in college and jobs.

Thanks to financial support from the Scripps Howard Fund, Elon’s School of Communications established a free, educational initiative to inspire high school students to embark on journalism careers.

The goal is to engage hundreds of high school students from around the country, providing hands-on journalism experience. Through the program’s virtual Exposure component, students will participate in four interactive learning sessions and build foundational journalism skills.

The second phase of the program, Immersion, brings high school juniors to Elon for a summer on-campus residential learning workshop.

Additionally, students who complete the Immersion program will be assigned two mentors — an Elon communications student and a professional journalist — to help identify, report and produce multimedia stories during their senior year of high school.

Choose from 60 online summer courses that provide in-depth and interactive exploration of academic material. Courses are ungraded and are not awarded credit. Courses are available in subjects including computer science, math, creative writing, social justice, philosophy, engineering, and more.

Each summer we build an intentional community. We create a space that is  open and supportive of each student as they dive into their creative work and navigate their growth as individuals. Dorm living, workshops, daily sing, meals, camping, and all campus-wide events are important parts of our community building. We are committed to supporting the range of experiences and expression that students share at Putney and to creating a community of understanding of one another that enriches all.

To this end, summers at Putney are an experiment in analog living, where students turn in their cell phones and other internet-ready devices at the beginning of the session and commit to being fully present with one another, in the dorms, studios and all other aspects of the program.

Careers in Science is a multi-year, year-round, paid internship and youth development program for San Francisco high school students who come from communities underrepresented in STEM, including girls and students of color.

How to apply

Applications will be open February 2, 2024 through April 1, 2024.

Selected applicants will be required to attend an in-person group interview on April 27, 2024.

Our programming offers 9th – 12th grade students the chance to dive deep and explore a particular field of study. Those selected for the program will enjoy access to world-class faculty, resources, industry professionals and a one-of-a-kind view from inside a career field.

The program will focus on the creation of new organizations designed to contribute to the greater good. Students who are interested in learning how to start their own organization for social good or leading social impact movements are encouraged to apply!

Working in teams, students engage with leading faculty and business executives to proactively apply what they learn to real-world problems while gaining a better understanding of the entrepreneurial mindset. Work is done in a highly collaborative group setting and culminates in the presentation of a venture pitch. Additionally, students are exposed to marketing, strategy, market-based economics and personal finance. They will learn the value of business in society as they develop enterprise and leadership skills that enable personal happiness and upward mobility, all while forging friendships that will last through and beyond college.

Nearly 400 students have participated in SELF since its inception and in summer 2025, we will again offer the SELF program experience as a 3-credit undergraduate course, BMGT262 “Enterprising Leader” through Terp Young Scholars.

By taking advantage of the Berkeley Changemaker track, you will sharpen your skills in three key areas—critical thinking, communication, and collaboration—while exploring what changemaking looks like in a wide variety of disciplines across campus. You will also become part of the campuswide Berkeley Changemaker, which has already enrolled some 20% of Berkeley’s undergraduates since its launch in summer 2022. Through daily lectures, compelling faculty interviews, and interactive team assignments with your fellow changemakers, you will develop your own changemaking mindset and learn how to turn your ideas into action, experiencing first hand all that UC Berkeley has to offer.

Your summer residential experience begins with orientation sessions, a campus scavenger hunt, and opportunities to meet with program staff and other participants. Activities and excursions are planned by UC Berkeley undergraduate Resident Assistants and Mentors (RAMs) and the program staff to help you build community with other students in your program, make the most out of your time at Berkeley, and prepare for your future college experience.

There are two ways to participate in the Leadership Institute:

Through both types of learning, you’ll meet students from around the world who are passionate about various issues, including civic engagement, gender equity, educational access and intercultural communication. You will spend your days delving into compelling topics in the course of your choosing, actively engaging with your peers and instructor. As you grapple with complex problems and brainstorm possible solutions together, you will practice a collaborative model of leadership, honing your skills in active listening, public speaking, problem-solving and teamwork. The program includes a 14-day High Sierra expedition, where you'll connect with your crew and strengthen your leadership abilities.

YLC is open to local Bay Area students who will be sophomores, juniors, or seniors in the upcoming school year.

As a program participant, you will:

• Gain hands-on experience in our facilities, including the Cybersecurity Innovation and Research Center, the ideaHUb business incubator, the Martin B. Greenberg Trading Room, Behavioral Research in Business Laboratory, and the newly launched Core Skills Lab featuring software and virtual tech tools to help students enhance their communication and presentation skills.

• Participate in simulations to learn how important corporate-to-consumer decisions are made.

• Make valuable connections with professors, administrators, industry experts, entrepreneurs, and other students.
