I began my hair care journey when I was 11 years old and I realized that my hair wasn't frizzy and messy, I just had curly hair. I realized that my hair needed maintenance that the other girls at my school didn't need. I started by putting any type of hair product I could find in my hair to tame the mess and going about my day but there was no consistency in the appearance and I didn't feel confident wearing it natural. In middle school, I became exhausted and began flat ironing my hair everyday to avoid the time consuming job of treating my hair and in turn, improving my self esteem. I ended up with permanent damage from the heat and I had to chop it all off if I ever wanted to go back to my natural state. This brought me to start my research and helped me gain the 6 years of knowledge that I have now about my curly hair.

In my green plastic basket, there are mounds of bumpy brushes. The clear bottle of gel sits half open and slimy on the bathroom counter. Next to it, there is a bottle of curl cream that spills over leaving the texture of yogurt and the scent of coconut blueberry milk covering my fingers. Running my hands through my soaked slippery hair, I completely cover every strand. My now pruny hands, reach for a bright green brush and twist and coil all the separated glossy curls.
