According to the 2017 US census, more than 5% of people now work from home and this number is set to grow in the coming years.

Richmond, VA/ December 2019

According to an article published by qz.com, the most recent US census in 2017 showed that 5.2% now work from home permanently. This figure has grown considerably since the 2000 census and is set to continue growing in the coming years.

Reportedly the rise in the number of people working from home has been aided by improvements in-home internet connection speeds as well as a societal shift towards more flexible and comfortable working environments.

Since 2000, the amount of people that have installed home internet connections has risen significantly and apart from in rural areas having a fast internet connection at home has become standard. Tasks that would once have required fast internet connection that could only be found in offices can now be completed from home and this has led to a rise in the number of employers allowing their staff to work from the comfort of their own home.

During this time, society has also changed and people are less willing to work in rigid jobs for long hours. Time with family and friends and a good work-life balance have become more important to the average American and for this reason, more and more people opt to work from home or ask their superiors if they can make the switch on a semi-permanent or permanent basis.

In addition to this, opportunities to work or make money fast online have also increased along with the popularity of the internet. According to personal finance blogs like Teach Me! Personal finance people can now make money in their free time by using apps on their phones and taking part in surveys. Many people are also opting to gain more flexibility by working freelance online and fulfilling tasks for businesses online as and when they become available. This ‘gig’ economy has grown immensely in the last ten years and is extremely popular with well-educated and recently graduated professionals looking for a good work-life balance.

It is projected that the number of people working online or working from home will increase in the coming years as more and more companies come around the idea of filling open job roles with remote workers or freelance staff.

Source: Teach Me!
