Period 1: The Triangle Trade

The triangle trade was a trading system between Africa, the American colonies, and Britain. It consisted of trading slaves, crops, and manufactured goods. Manufactured goods, especially rum, were transported to Africa from Europe for African slaves. Then slaves were shipped to the American colonies, which usually lasted around six months, with conditions being horrible, and disease being present. African slaves usually revolted and committed suicide by jumping off the boats or refusing to eat over eight million slaves were killed in duration of the triangle trade. After the slaves arrived in the American colonies the ships went back to Europe, bringing back crops from the American colonies. Crops included tobacco and cotton.

The activity we did for this period was get a Columbian Exchange map, and draw the New and Old Worlds. We wrote what was traded amongst them and other things that involved the two. This helped me a lot because I am more of a hands on learner, so drawing and writing that stuff down helped me a lot to remember the stuff I wrote.

Period 2: Jamestown

Jamestown was founded in 1607, by the Virginia Company of London. It was the first permanent english settlement in America, and was led by Captain John Smith. Jamestown brought lots of trouble and deaths for people that arrived. The newly arrived settlers were faced with disease, starvation, and Indians. The climate was horrible in Jamestown, and the colony lacked skilled workers. The colony consisted of high elite people. The colony looked like it was going to be a failure, and then in 1610 Jamestown recieved more settlers and supplies. Jamestown turned around and started to produce their first prominent profitable source of export, which was tobacco.

An activity we did for this period was a pamphlet of the thirteen colonies. We had to pick one colony and write about it in a pamphlet to try and get people to come to your colony. This was extremely helpful because it allowed you to learn a lot of information about the colony you choose. This activity was not the best though and could be improved, by maybe going around and learning of the colonies like the activity we did pertaining to the seventies, where we went around the room to learn what everyone else wrote about.

Period 3: Proclamation of 1763

It was created by the British Board of Trade under the approval of King George the 3rd. The Proclamation of 1763 was signed in October on the 7th. It was a decree in the beginning of the Pontiac's uprising. It prohibited the settlement beyond the invisible line down the Appalachians. This led to the resentment of how much control the British had over the American colonies.

This is essential to know, well for us. It was on the AP test and I was grateful Mrs. Thomure thought us this in class, it helped me a lot on the AP test. It's a really good thing to remember in case it's on the AP test again but mostly just so you have knowledge of it.

Period 4: The Louisiana Purchase

The Louisiana Purchase occurred in 1803. It was purchased by President Thomas Jefferson from France. Not only did he buy 828,000 square miles of land for only 15 million, it also doubled the size of the colonies they had already currently had control of. The land ranged from the Rocky Mountains to the Mississippi River and from Canada to the Gulf of Mexico.

The activity we did for this period was viewing Hip Hughes videos in class. Although Mrs. Thomure is a great teacher, it's always good to learn the material from multiple places. I recommend viewing his videos on things you don't understand clearly and just to review.

The Mexican American War was from 1846 until 1848. The war was primarily based on James K. Polks "manifest destiny," which said that the United States needed to expand to the Pacific Ocean. The Mexican American War was the first armed fight on foreign land. The outcome of the war was a win for America, gaining California, New Mexico, and todays United States southwest.

The Mexican American War was on the AP test, and watching videos and going over it so much in class helped me to know this war a lot. You should learn to not get the Mexican American War with the Spanish American War which are two different things. A lot of people had problems with that.

Was on March 3rd, of 1871. It was put in effect by Congress in an attempt to erase American Indian identity and to weaken the tribal leaders authority. This act ended the cultural things indians did and stopped them from being seen as an independent nation of themselves.

Period 8: Brown vs. Board of Education

This was a Supreme Court case in the year of 1954. It included Linda Brown, a nine year old girl who had to ride the bus across town to attend an all black school due to the school she lived by was white. Her parents sued the school district. And this case was taken by the Supreme Court, this was a majorly important case. This case overturned Plessy vs. Ferguson which stated "separate but equal" was okay. The Supreme Court ruled that segregation was illegal and schools should be integrated.

The activity we did for this period was filling out a packet of most of the events that led to civil rights. I found this helpful because we had to find out what event it was by just looking at the picture that was provided. After we found out what event it was we had to write down when it took place, who was involved, and what happened. It also served as a studying essential.

December 7th, 1941, the day that would "live in infamy." One of the biggest reasons the United States went into World War 2. Pearl Harbor was an American naval base in Hawaii that was attacked by the Japanese. There was over three thousand casualties, and numerous destroyed ships caused by Japanese warplanes.

The activity we did for this period was the Pearl Harbor Thesis, we had documents to read that were in a packet and we had to write a document based response. This helped gain information about Pearl Harbor and help us in learning and preparing to write a DBQ, which is a Document Based Question, something we do all year.

Period 9: The Fall of the Berlin Wall

The Berlin Wall was made of barbed wire and concrete between East and West Berlin. It was created in 1961 to keep "fascists" out. It stood tall until November 9th, 1989. The East Berlin Communist Party's spokesman announced that their relationship with the West have changed. And people were now free to pass through the border. Over two million people went to West Berlin from East Berlin to celebrate by destroying the wall, and at last bringing it down.

The activity we did for this period was a time capsual project amongst the groups of the class. Each group was given a certain topic of the 1970's, for example like social changes in the 1970's. Every group got a different topic. Each group would bring artifacts, written documents, and other things pertaining to the topic through that decade in the United States. We would then have time to put the time capsules together and go around the room and take notes on the other topics, and learn from what they provided. It was very educational helpful, and I learned a lot from it
