He is caught and he has to empty his pockets and the old man takes his notebook.  He also sees a girl about his age when he was spying on the old man in a clock.  In the second chapter Hugo is repairing the clocks and while he is doing that he spies on the old man.  The old man tells him to not steal from him again and he asks for his name and Hugo said "Hugo.......Hugo Cabret".  In the third chapter the main thing that happens is that Hugo follows the old man to his house.  Hugo keeps hitting the sidewalk with the heels of his shoes and the old man is annoyed by it and tells him to stop.  Then it brings you to the old man's house and he says "Did you know the sound of heels hitting the sidewalk attracts ghosts?" to get Hugo's attention. It worked and he shut the door with Hugo standing there.

Hugo Cabret runs through the train station and tries to stay out of sight. He opens a vent cover and disappears inside. Hugo looks out of a clock at a toy booth. He needs a toy to fix something. Hugo tries to steal it but he gets caught, and the old man takes his notebook. After that he lets Hugo go. Hugo runs away and he goes to his home. Hugo gets some oil and geos to repair all the clocks. When he is done he goes to the man and asks for his notebook back.
