We discuss what we are doing in our schools and compare. Being general music, everything is interest driven and student oriented. We have a composition contest where students who win in each category attend the Festival and go to clinics and master classes on composition, and attend the composition award ceremony. Within the last 6 years or so, JSGM has blown up in this area. They have added almost any music composition category you can imagine in a way to reach out to as many students as they can. Before this, almost no one knew about this contest and it was poorly attended. Now, the ceremony is overflowing and they are looking for a new hall to host the ceremony in. Those statements are things I have heard before, but I had no idea they were connected to actual teaching theory, so I thought that was interesting.  I have noticed when students generally enjoy a class, it is no surprise that everything else becomes simpler.  Classroom management is not as much of a struggle, grades improve, and less contacts have to be made home.  When students feel their learning experience is important to the teacher, they will thrive. In my PLN, I have seen other professionals take student interests into account. For example, when designing materials for the evolution unit, the other biology teacher I work with noticed many students enjoy reality TV. Many of my students know what they would like to do, whether it is a career path or a college path, but they don't always feel like they have the ability to make it happen. Connected Learning increases their confidence by showing them that it is possible. When they are exposed to college-level material in a field they are interested in, they realize that they CAN succeed in that field if they put their mind to it. Our Bridge courses offer them the opportunity to "get their feet wet" in a field of interest. It also exposes them to the college feel, by utilizing our campus software, COBRA. They are given a student ID with access to all campus resources. Overall, it makes them a college student which greatly increases their confidence. That alone makes them more likely to attend class and complete assignments. I shared with my PLN that I would love to hear more about math teachers who are doing this well because while I am interested in it, I am curious about what it would actually look like in my classroom. I really enjoyed the padlet discussion breaks! The learning principles stuck out to me and helped me really have a better understanding of Connected Learning as it helped me think about my classroom and what I am doing, but also what I can be doing, The list of what an educator may hear their students say was enlightening. I would love to hear my students use lines like these to reassure myself as their teacher as well to see their own connections to their own learning. 

As I viewed this presentation I thought about how valuable this could be to share with my principal. With this pandemic my hopes is we take what is work in education and see where we can go in the future to better our students’ learning experiences. As we are slowly reaching the end of this school year, I have a nervousness that we will go back into some of ours of the past and in the first video it was stated that connected learning makes it relevant to our times.

I have gathered great resources and have received amazing book recommendations as well, and I built a family on Twitter that challenges me, supports me, and is always there when I need encouragement. I feel as if connected learning is something I do often for my kids but also for myself. It was nice to get formal language to common practices. I find in my PLNs that when I want to know truly know something more about a topic, I can have a conversation with ALOT of different people. Those thoughts and statements were very eye-opening. I feel like a lot of times it is more common to hear the opposite when we do any type of traditional teaching. Students might say, "when am I ever going to need to know this?"
