Family clans migrated from eastern Canada to Madeline Island a thousand years ago, led by a vision that their journey would end in a land where the "food grows on water" Manoomin or wild rice. Sokaogon means "Post in Lake" people because of a spiritual significance of a post, possibly the remains of a petrified tree that stood nearby Post Lake. They are also known as the lost tribe because of the legal title to the 12 square mile reservation from the treaty of 1854 was lost on a shipwreck on Lake Superior.

The Strawberry Moon Powwow is important to the Sokaogon Community because there is a deep connection between everyone. In the article "Indigenous talk looks at cultural importance of the Strawberry Moon" the author Evan Saunders explains that "The Strawberry Moon reminds us 'nobody exists in a vacuum. We’re all connected together especially when we’re able to chat and share something'”. (Saunders, 2021). Meaning that there is connection to everyone and who they are, and that they can meet together and talk about it.

This video talks about the importance of rice with the Sakogon Community. In the beginning of the video, Fred Ackely Jr. says some words that help him harvest the land for rice. He also has been rice harvesting for over 65 years. He talks about the tradition of rice harvesting, how his mom has been teaching him ever since he was a little boy, and how that brings prayer and survival to the community.

According to tribal history, tribal members were promised the land by a treaty signed by President Franklin Pierce. The agent, who was to confirm the treaty and secure the land for them, drowned on his return trip from Washington. The Tribe, under the leadership of Chief Willard Ackley, finally and after a long struggle, received federal recognition and reservation status in 1937 (Sokaogon Chippewa Community Website, 2018).
