KATHMANDU - At least 18 people were killed when a small plane crashed and caught fire while it was taking off from Nepal's capital Kathmandu on Wednesday, officials said.

The plane was carrying two crew members and 17 technicians to Pokhara city for maintenance checks, Airport Security Chief Arjun Chand Thakuri said.

The Kathmandu Post newspaper said five bodies had been recovered from the crash site. Television visuals showed fire fighters trying to put out the fire and thick black smoke rising into the sky.

A woman driver was injured when a big steel plate flew through her windscreen and cut her neck and cheek on an elevated expressway.

The incident happened on the Bang Na-Bang Pakong expressway in Bangphli district at about 6pm on Sunday.

Police and rescue workers found Pranee Rungsuksai with her cheek and neck bleeding and her car parked under the elevated expressway.

Police found a hole in the driver’s side of the windscreen of her car. Inside the car was a steel plate about 13 centimetres wide and long, and 2.5cm thick.

Ms Pranee said she was driving on the expressway in the middle lane with two pickup trucks in front and on the right of her car.

Suddenly the steel plate shot through the right part of her windscreen and cut her neck and right cheek.

She tried to calm herself and exited the expressway. She parked the car and waited for help.

Observers are divided on whether Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin should be removed from office over his decision to appoint former convict Pichit Chuenban as a PM's Office Minister in the last cabinet reshuffle.

Former senator Wanchai Sornsiri said the Constitutional Court is likely to throw out the case against Mr Srettha, as no court has issued a ruling on the specific crime which would have barred Pichit from assuming the position.

Pichit was accused of attempted bribery when he represented former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra in a controversial land case back in 2008. While he was ultimately jailed for six months, Mr Wanchai noted that Pichit was jailed for contempt of court, not attempted bribery.

The case against Mr Srettha began when a group of 40 caretaker senators asked the Constitutional Court to remove him from office in May, for allegedly violating the constitution by appointing Pichit as a PM's Office Minister.

They argued that Pichit was unfit to assume a cabinet post because he had served jail time in 2008 for attempting to bribe Supreme Court officials by handing them a paper bag containing 2 million baht.

Pichit resigned from the minister post just before the court accepted the petition, which was seen as a bid to spare Mr Srettha from a legal wrangle.

The court will rule on the case against Mr Srettha on Aug 14.

PHUKET: The body of a Chinese tourist missing since going swimming at Karon beach on Thursday night was found on rocks near Freedom beach in Muang district on Monday.

A fisherman discovered the body and informed police about 9.30am, said Pol Col Khundet Na Nong Khai, chief of Karon police.

Emergency responders sent to scene said Qin Yuan's body was lying face-down on the rocks. It was taken to Vachira Phuket Hospital for post-mortem examination.  

The Chinese consular office in Phuket had been notified, police said.

Qin, 27, was last seen about 7.30pm on Thursday. 

Karon mayor Jadet Wicharasor said a Chinese couple had rented a surfboard on Thursday evening and returned it about 6.30pm.

The couple again went swimming at Karon beach about 7.30pm. By then it was dark and all the lifeguards had left the beach.

Rescuers began a search after being alerted by Karon municipal officials that the worried woman was looking for her missing husband.

Municipal and local authorities, police and the 3rd Naval Fleet all sent teams to assist in the search for the missing swimmer.
