Sheriff Bell

The character trope that fits Sheriff Bell the most would be the stereotype of the grumpy, old, cranky sheriff. He appears to be quite noble and brave, but fits the type of that classic old white cop that seeks to fix all the injustices in the world. In his internal dialogue, he says, “He'd killed a fourteen year old girl and I can tell you right now I never did have no great desire to visit with him let alone go to his execution but I done it.” He explained that he knew that it was only right that the boy get executed, but he also felt for the kid so he decided to support him through the entire process.

Chigurh

Chigurh asserts himself as the play's main antagonist, as he takes up the part of the "deviousbad guy". He has a more silent yet devious appearance to his character, establishing himself as some type of sinister murderer. While not many details are given about his appearance, his character trope becomes clear through his actions. In the beginning of the chapter, it states, "He was slightly bent over when Chigurh squatted and scooted his manacled hands beneath him to the back of his knees. In the same motion he sat and rocked backward and passed the chain under his feet and then stood instantly and effortlessly." He was able to escape the handcuffs effortlessly, almost as if he had done this before. He then went on a killing spree, first being the deputy and second the man whose car he stole. This establishes his character as a criminal-like figure who already seems to be causing some problems in the story.

Moral? Immoral? Amoral?

The moral character in this chapter is clearly Sheriff Bell, as he is the humble yet angry sheriff who stays true to the value he places on justice, even if what he's doing feels wrong. On the other hand, the immoral character in this chapter is most definitely Chigurh, as he is pictured as this murderous criminal who not only escaped handcuffs and killed a deputy, but then stole the deputy's car, stole someone else's car, and then killed that driver as well. Chigurh is clearly a menace who knows nothing else but this life of brutal crime. Finally, the amoral character in this story is Moss, as he doesn't seem to go by any pre-existing trope or stereotype, but seems to be somewhat morally just. In fact, during his encounter with the trail of dead bodies, he decided to go back and get the shotgun, as using a government handgun is illegal. While this is true, he still seems to be making the decisions based on the situation and not based on pre-existing morals and ethics.
